“Birthday Celebration”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

We stayed at The Otterburn Castle Country House Hotel on March 29th to celebrate my Wife's 60th birthday and could not fault it at all. The young lady at Reception was very friendly, extremely efficient and we were taken to our room with minimum fuss. We were upgraded to a suite four poster bed as it was my Wife's birthday, so thank you very much indeed.
The room was beautiful, large, warm and a delightful view. The bathroom was also excellent with first class toiletries. The bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed a good nights sleep.
Dinner that evening was superb with a varied choice of food, thouroughly enjoyed it and the Northumbrian full breakfast next morning was again cooked to perfection. The staff at all times were extremely helpful and friendly.
All in all my Wife felt that the whole experience was very special for this very special birthday.

Room Tip: Room 3 was superb.

We stayed here 23rd march for one night with 12other members of our family.firstly our room no 10 was roomy but a little tired and to be honest a little chilly, but that said other members of our party had lovely cosy rooms some a little tired also but on the whole very clean.the staff were excellent and the food was really first class,we had a room to ourselves as there were 14 of us and we all enjoyed our evening meal with wine and nothing was too much trouble for the waiting staff.it was my fathers 80 th bday and we definately will return for other occasions I have no doubt,a great stay was had by all .

Room Tip: Room no 17 and 18 were about the best

Maybe I was just unlucky with the room I was given (no. 17) but it smelled damp and had a huge damp patch on the ceiling, which looked like it was going to collapse at any time. I was looking forward to the evening meal and was disappointed. While there was nothing particularly wrong with it, it was mediocre at best. Breakfast the following morning was good and all the staff were very friendly. Would I return? Probably not.

Dinner and breakfast couldn't have been better we had a ground floor room as my mother cannot climb stairs (no lifts). Room was very large, clean and well equipped. Could do with some updating and new beds. I would still stay here again for one night

Our initial impression was one of some disappointment as it was rather austere and clearly in need of a refurbishment. Our room however was quiet and spacious and every member of staff that we encountered were knowledgeable and enthusiastic including those in the restaurant and kitchen. As a consequence we enjoyed our two day stay as we did the good standard of the albeit fairly simple cuisine. If we were not on a good value two night stay we might feel a little unhappy at the full room rate, and would expect to have more modern facilities that includes a TV that is only able to provide three viewable channels! The Bistro is helpfully staffed but is particularly unatmospheric and offers only the most basic food; I have never experienced such a tough piece of almost inedible gammon and the accompanying pineapple salsa was some

My husband and i stayed here overnight for our anniversary. It was a Travelzoo deal. The room was dated and water mark on ceiling. Decor was in keeping with the castle, creaky stairs and lots of them till we got to our room. The bathroom was large and bed comfortable, albeit a double(we are used to a king!) The room was very warm even with the window open!
We had a 3 course meal, it was al a carte so small portions for big eaters. Tasty and good choice from menu. All locally sourced ingredients.(supplement of £4 for the steak)
The staff were very hospitable and friendly.
Had a good sleep, no noises from the grounds or other rooms so very peaceful.
Breakfast was lovely, great choice and as much toast as you wanted! Again staff couldn't do enough for us.
All in all a nice stop over, however wouldn't pay the full price for an overnight stay, as we have stayed in nicer places for alot less.

not sure when something moves from having character and charm to becoming a bit tat. I think otterburn castle is still on the charm side, in my experience everywhere was clean but it is an old building with some interesting features - apart from the almost ankle deep red gravel in the parking area, park as near the entrance as you can particularly if any of your party are in heels.
As has been indicated in previous reviews staff are all very welcoming and smiling, food was good - although for the location i was a little disappointed there wasn't any game on the menu - so for the location a deserved 4/5
