“Good for an expected 3 star, restaurant average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2011

We decided to stay here for a mid week break and got a good deal for DBB directly with the hotel for £115 for both of us. I have to say that for a mid week deal it was worth the money but wouldnt really want to pay more than that. We also sent a mail to enquire and got a phone call from a helpful receptionist who we booked directly with. We were given a lovely spacious bright four poster room which was a pleasant surprise. The outside and grounds are just beautiful, the inside is a lot older and hasnt been updated in a while. The drawing room was just average where we had a drink before dinner. We waited an hour before been seated but were just relaxing at the time although was starting to get hungry. The restaurant was quite small, fairly intimate but not fancy by any means. The food and wines were average and not up to 2 rosette standard. My husband ordered steak medium and it arrived burnt and well done. The staff were not available to mention to so he just ate it and complained at the end and just got asked 'would you like dessert' and no apology or that the message would be passed on to the chef. The desserts were very nice, and to be fair overall was decent for the rate we got, but not if you were to pay full price.
Maybe for weddings (if you want somewhere with nice photos at a lower cost), the outside is nice and you can get a marquis. But please check out other places first and check that this is a 3 star price. Was going to take my mother here for her birthday as they like fine dining but am glad I didnt. Overall as expected for a 3 star but the restaurant is more 3 star too. I think if they spent money on doing the place up, added in a spa they could aim to be 4 star.

My partner and I stayed here for one night on a spontaneous night away. We found the hotel online and called straight away to see if they had a room available for the night. The lovely receptionist explained that they were having difficulties with the computer system at that point in time, but she would call back when she could check availability. Within ten minute I heard back from her and booked a room at a very reasonable rate.

We arrived at the hotel at about 9 in the evening and were greeted straight away (by name!) by the same receptionist who I'd spoken to earlier. She showed us to our room (10), which was a very nice touch. Our room itself was lovely. Tastefully decorated and very comfortable, with everything you could need, including bathrobes. The only problem was with the shower, which had more water squirting out of the pipes than the actual shower head.

We had a few glasses of wine in the bar before bed, which was a very relaxing experience. They even let us sit in a large, private room which, despite the old furniture, was very extravagent. A woman (we presumed the manager) came in to say hello, which was very nice.

Breakfast was very generous and perfectly cooked. Even without most of the items, the full breakfast was still too big for me to finish.

Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer,

We stayed at the Otterburn Tower for two nights whilst attending wedding at a venue nearby. We had a large comfortable room, and an enjoyable meal on the first night. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and we can't fault the service. The hotel could do with a makeover here and there, but nothing that spoiled our stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 14 - nice and big with a lovely view

Booked afternoon tea here with friends on Bank Hol Monday and wasnt particularly impressed. When we arrived we were directed to the lounge which was ok, but very cold. A member of staff came and explained what the sandwich choices were, took our order and disappeared, returning 5 or so minutes later with our teas and coffees. My cup had lipstick on it so I asked for another which I did get, but without a particularly sincere apology.
Our food was ok, but not really anything special. Sandwiches had obviously been freshly made and scones were ok. Was only one small piece of cake, no choice and a couple of fairly nice shortbread biscuits.
Overall it was a slightly disappointing experience as the lounge had little atmosphere, the dirty cup wasnt great, there was little choice or variety in the food and we didnt really feel like the staff were particularly interested in making our afternoon special.
Unlikely to visit again, which is a shame as we all really like the area

We got married at the tower a few weeks ago and everything was perfect! Food was gorgeous, staff were excellent, rooms lovely and very clean. Would definitely recommend the tower for a wedding.

I've just read other reviews and am flabbergasted to read the negative comments. We found the whole experience extremely positive and having stayed in many similar hotels, would count it as one of the best.

The decor was matching and in fitting with the historic nature of the building, our room was huge and the bed extremely comfortable. The whole ambience and atmosphere was historic, calm, beautiful. The food was superb and the service excellent.

What more can I say - hope we will return to do it all again!!

Room Tip: We had room 8 which was at the top of the building, so had to climb stairs, but was large, quiet, pe...

We had a 'family' room.  The childs zip bed was a bed settee pulled out and the mattresss was very thin.  the carpet would have been more comfortable but it was too dirty to sleep on.  The bathroom had paper falling off the wall, was dirty, dangerous pipes in the bath and coming out of the wall.  There was a hole in the sheets. The tv only had 3 channels - one was digital and bbc 1 and 2.  The electrical cable to the kettle was broken and dangerous. The decor in the main hotel was shabby and worn. The food was okay at best. The only redeeming feactures was the view and the waiting on staff.when we complained in the evening nothing was done and the manager or owner we spoke to on checking out had a 'what could i do?' attitudewe would not go back if it was free as it would be a waste of petrol
