“Best by a country mile!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

This is an excellent coffee shop/restaurant just off the main coastal route near Widdrington, (Turn off at the Widdrington Inn, be careful of the sharp right hand bend and the entrance to the property which you come upon just after the bend). We have used it a couple of times now and found it serves great home made food, fulsome meals, (try the plate busting fish, home chips and peas), and serves their own brand of blended coffee. There is access for wheelchair users. The toilets are spotless. The staff are friendly, helpful and pretty efficient even at the peak time when we were there on this last occasion. There is an upstairs gift shop which is also card central if you want cards depicting the locality. There is an attached farm shop but so far we have not ventured into that. This is rapidly becoming a 'must stop' en route from North Yorkshire to north Northumberland.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback and pleased to hear we are a regular pitstop for your journey northbound!!! As you mentioned you haven't as yet visited the farm shop - I can't recommend highly enough a visit - we sell everything from toilet rolls and toothpaste to local milk, bread, honey, ice cream etc and we have what I would consider to be the best butcher counter in the county (if not further afield)!!!! All the beef and lamb comes directly from our own farm - I may be biased but I'm yet to find a better tasting steak for miles! We also make all our own burgers and sausages with our own invention flavours eg The Breakfast Sausage is a pork base with added orange marmalade, The Country Barn Sizzler is pork based with added Shropshire Blue Cheese and peaches and the Boozy Banger we are bringing out in honour of Fathers Day will be beef based with black pudding and Newcastle Brown Ale! Definitely worth a try. Your comment about the toilets being spotless is very well received as we don't use professional cleaners we do everything in house with our own staff. Thank you again for taking time to submit your review.

“Superb Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

Called into the shop and could not believe why It's taken so long to visit. They have so many lovely things I don't know where to start. The bread I bought was delicious, so too the spare ribs and a filo pastry filled with tomato and goat cheese.

Can't wait to go back.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback - we do strive to keep the lines we carry varied and introducing new lines when we can as well as maintaining the customers favourites! If you havent already tried our coffee shop I would thoroughly recommend it. Every Friday we serve dlocal haddock in our home made batter with hand cut chunky chips cooked the old fashioned way!! They are superb and have a very strong following of happy supporters! We also served a traditional Sunday Roast every week with all the beef and lamb coming directly from our own farm and all the vegetables we use are fresh hand peeled- the only frozen veg we use are peas! Our Yorkshire puddings are home made and as big as hats!
Thank again for your custom and positive feedback- please come back and visit us again soon.

“Very pleasant experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

Had a run up the coast and called in again for coffee and cheese scone. Lovely relaxing hour spent in the cafe and the gift shop. Got some very reasonably priced unusual little gifts. Cannot wait to go back. Everyone was very friendly. Have yet to try the shop for local produce etc. but it looks great.

Hello there! Thank you so much for visiting our coffee shop and gift shop. Although biased I fully agree the cheese scones are gorgeous- usually why we sell out every day! I think it must be the little drop of mustard powder we put in them to give them an extra kick!? I'm please you liked the gift shop as we have only just re stocked it in the last 2 weeks and re- opened it. I have tried to get a good cross section of gift ideas to suit all pockets. We are still awaiting more stock so please have a look in next time you are passing. also if you havnt already been in our farm shop I hope you will be equally impressed. We have a large butcher counter that is all presented on site by our resident butchers. The supremeaward winning beef and lamb come directly from our own farm and the chickens are sourced from Thistleyhaugh farm near Rothbury, they are organic and free range. The taste of these chickens takes you right back to childhood and what chicken was meant to taste like. We make our own sausages and burgers and pease pudding. If you cant find what you are looking for in the counter the butchers are all too happy to help suggest an alternative. We also stock local cream, ice cream, honey, vegetables as well as bread from Running Fox bakery in Felton. The same scones you have in the coffee shop can be bought from the farm shop as take away items as well as all our other home baked goodies of pies, pasties and cakes. We look forward to welcoming you back any time.

“This is a nice restaurant, spoilt by lack of of choice.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

We visited this farm shop/restaurant with my sister as part of a day out in the country side. Our first impression of the restaurant was very good. The atmosphere was good, and we were looking forward to a nice meal. The menu, although limited looked good. There was a Sundays roast on offer which we were interested in. Here though was a problem. My sister is vegetarian, so asked what was there Available for her. The answer was "You can have the roast without gravy". Our, next question was "Is there meat stock in the gravy". Yes was the answer. So she could have had a Sundays roast, without meat, or gravy!! As we were starving, we ended up with egg and chips twice, and a goats cheese salad.

Hello
Tahnk you so much for taking time out to both visit The Country Barn and write a review. I'm so sorry your visit did not satisfy your expectations and especially that you were disappointed in our choice of menu. I'm assuming your are referring to our limited menu being related to the vegetarian option rather than the standard menu ? The vegetarian options on the standard menu do include hot and cold food, jacket potato and cold sandwich fillings, vegetarian quiche and pate option, the ability to make your own filling for toasties and paninis including a wide range of vegetarian options as well as hot food egg and chips and the soup is usually suitable for vegetarian.
I'm very disappointed to hear about your experience regarding the query of vegetarian Sunday Lunch option. We always have a vegetarian option available and we have vegetarian gravy to use. I cannot understand why the member of staff did not offer this to you? This is something I will be taking up with the staff involved on shift that day when they come in this weekend. Once again I am so sorry you did not have a fulfilling experience and hope that it has not put you off returning?
