“Gorgeous romantic castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Lovely walk up and really interesting staff, really got a feel for the place. Bear in mind no toilets there so go before you visit! visit the Getrude Jekyll garden it is such a beautiful peaceful place.

“Stunning!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

The views are fantastic, quite a walk if you struggle, but is a bus up to the castle if needed.
Very interesting place lots to see, free to national trust members

“3-30 Closed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Thought an unusual way to see Holy Island would be by boat trip from Seahouses. This being high tide and the causeway covered. expected a quiet visit. Unfortunately the National Trust don't know about the trips and the 80 visitors went to the English Heritage Priory which had the wit to be open. A missed opportunity I think.

“Unique but can get monotonous”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

A garrison in the first instance that saw limited action, then eventually became a home on which much money was lavished; the famous duo Edward Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll were moved in to transform the castle, adding on buildings and to make a walled garden out on the barren pasture-land. The ‘house’ (for that’s what it is) is a collection of Lutyens furniture and furnishings and, frankly, a bit monotonous when you see room after room of it. A rather nice William Morris–upholstered settee, though. It’s about 1km if you want to walk from the town/village else you can take the shuttle bus. It’s a stiff short climb to the entrance (what do you expect? – it’s a castle and not meant to be easy to get into) and the ramparts afford wonderful views of the island, the surrounding mud-flats and the mainland. An NT property – take your card.

“1920's”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

great little castle perched on the outcrop of rock. Loved the interior by Luytens. Shame about some of the visitors. One mother allowed her child to use the old bathroom!!!
