“how did this place get in conde naste?”

Marshall Meadows Country House Hotel

Stayed in late August 2007. Room rate £125.00. Got leaflets and confirmation in the post. Looked as though it was going to be great and special.
The room my wife, child and I received was pokey. Decor was faded and jaded. Parts of decor had watermarks thereon. Just downright grubby. The place was staffed by untidy teenagers.
The whole place is ready for a complete revamp.

The place was ill-maintained. For example in the restaurant on the upper level a three bulb light unit that provided the main lighting. One bulb was missing and had clearly shorted out electrically the scorch marks were clear to see.on the wall mounting.

Breakfast was okay but served by some youth who complained that he'd worked late and had to do the breakfast shift. He was unkempt and downright untidy for a place of this "alleged" status"

In the late evening we were constantly disturbed by the kitcken staff grouped outside having a cig below/adjacent to our room window. This went on until nearly midnight. Once asleep one of the "Boy Racer" staff woke us up abruptly and I assume the rest of the place upwhen he left the place at 1am! with his staight through car exhaust.

Loads of guests commented on how poor the place was. Don't even think of booking it for a wedding way too risky

On my experience and that of my wife I'd say "skip this place" the travel lodge three miles away knocked the spots of of for £40.00 per night.

The place is in the Conde Naste magazine. Shall not be giving any creedence to there reviews anymore that's for sure

Expected a quiet country hotel with good food and nice accommodation - but did not get what we expected. The hotel is adjacent to the A1 and there is alot of traffic noise, the main railway also runs past. The hotel is shabby and the decor in the rooms appalling. The shower did not work - but this was fixed promptly, and the shower curtain stank of mould. Apart from this the room was clean. The staff were friendly, obliging and helpful - without them I think that our stay would have been quite grim.
The menu seems ok if you like things like ostrich and shark (these were done to death in the 80s) but the food was poor. On our first night we ordered steak which was dry and overcooked - it was supposed to be medium. The stater and dessert menu never changed the whole time we were there (apart from the variety of soup on offer). One evening I had chicken on a squash mash. Putting a few pieces of chive on top of a dish does not make it well cooked - the squash had so much black pepper in it it burned your mouth, the vegetables were raw, and the chicken tough.
There appears to be a good choice at breakfast. Seeing Eggs benedict on the menu I thought I would have that - big mistake. The muffin the egg came on was not toasted, the "ham" that came with it was actually cold bacon and the hollandaise sauce was, I am sure, just melted butter with some vinegar stirred into it. By no stretch of the imagination was it a proper hollandaise.

Overall we paid alot of money to stay at a second rate hotel. Would not go back.

We stayed here as the first night of our honeymoon, on our way up to Scotland.

As it was a special occasion, we'd booked and paid extra for a 4-poster room. The bed was handsome, and the view lovely, but they were the best bits.

The room was tired and in need of a bit of tlc. The linen felt cheap and the bathroom was so-so, with cheap toiletries.

Breakfast was ok. My husband raved about the black pudding, which was a highlight, but I didn't get overly excited about my food.

All in all, pretty disappointing, especially as we didn't get a bargain rate. Wouldn't go back.

Stayed in this hotel recently. Room was very comfortable with good size bathroom and all mod cons. The gardens were very pretty and t he staff more than helpful. After a peaceful night we enjoyed a hearty english breakfast loads of choice inc fresh fruit & good coffee. An ideal base to explore this beautiful coast.

“Acceptable”

We stayed here for a weekend in April as part of a group of about 20 people. That weekend there was another, slightly smaller group staying too. The staff were ok. The room was acceptable, but not great, and I for one thoroughly dislike poly-cotton sheets.

Our two dinners were served in a very large, rather bleak room. The food was not as good as the descriptions, and although we had ordered all three courses some time in advance. quantities did not appear to have been thought out before, so some batches of vegetables were much too undercooked. It took time to get the piped music turned off - and even after that, it was difficult to hear the speakers.

Breakfast was ok - once we had learnt the system.

The lounge and the bar were comfortable and well-sized.
