“Great dining experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

Didn't use for overnight but came in for dinner on a Sunday night. Despite arriving just after a coach load was expecting dinner, we were very well catered for by friendly staff. The menu was imaginative and the food generous in portion size and of top quality. Great 'Scottish Chicken' (served stuffed with haggis).

A lovely short break was spent here. Whilst the inn looks like it could do with updating, it oozes character and is quaint. The bar is lovely and we were made very welcome. The food was excellent in both presentation and quality. Will visit again.

The decor of this hotel is set in another time. We didn't stay there but had dinner in the restaurant. It soon became clear that the waiters were Spanish one of whom had little knowledge of English. This led to some confusion over drinks and food orders.
Having said that the restaurant was clean, quiet and well presented. The food, two surf and turf and one lamb shank was acceptable but nothing special. Chips with surf and turf came in a separate dish on the plate which slipped off when served. My waiter decided to pick up one of the spilled chips and place it back on the plate!
Cheese was not on the menu but on request they provided a decent selection with grapes and biscuits. However we struggled to order three glasses of port as our waiter seemed not to have heard of it.
The bar area, frequented by locals, is in need of some attention - a hole in the ceiling has been amateurishly repaired.
All in all a strange meal experience which we wouldn't rush to repeat.

We have stayed here for 4 nights with a group of friends. On arrival we received a very warm welcome and staff throughout our stay were friendly and efficient. The food was excellent with very generous helpings. Our rooms were comfortable and quiet. The location was excellent with the added bonus of discount vouchers for Bamburgh Castle and I believe other attractions are also discounted. Some or all of us will certainly be returning.

Very friendly staff although "Manuel" behind the bar. Reception supposed to be open 7.30 am - 9.30 pm I tried ringing reception at 8.40 monday night (rang for ages) no answer. One of our party had 2 phone calls but reception could not put the callers through. Monday night beef as tough as old boots, Tuesday night pork the same. Rest of meals good and good size portions but service deadly slow. Rooms had very creaky and sloping floors, some had no heating (we were a party of 35 people) heaters were then supplied but one took the electric trip switch out, no electrical appliance is P.A.T. tested for safety. Our bed gave us both severe back pain. bathroom tiny, I could sit on the loo and wash my hands in the sink or dangle my feet in the bath all at the same time, 2 rickety chairs and ripped carpet (trip hazard) in the lounge. The village is a one horse town with nothing of interest.

Room Tip: try somewhere else

We broke our journey home from Scotland and arrived quite late but were made very welcome by Caroline the Manager who had already arranged parking immediately outside the hotel. We had a very good en suite double bedroom overlooking the charming garden at the rear of the hotel. Breakfast was excellent and hearty, including the vegetarian option. Our dinner that evening was good value with attentive and obliging staff. The bar was well stocked and appeared to be supported by the villagers. We have noted the various reviews but we had no complaints and we are already planning another stay this Autumn. The hotel makes an excellent base for visiting Holy Island and Alnwick.

Room Tip: We had a room at the rear of the hotel and slept very well. It was large and had plenty of room for...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

I have stayed here 3 times, at different times of the year. Each time there has been one poor girl running reception, the bar and food orders, all done with a smile and a chat. The bar is a locals bar, a bit tatty but cosy. Rooms are different! Basic but immaculate! It is an old building so don't expect swish. One problem, which I have had on every visit, no hot water. Barely warm and the staff try their best to rectify it. So be ready for a cool shower. Rooms can be cold but extra heaters in situ. Food excellent.

Room Tip: Check the location of the room. Ones at front are the best
