“paul and claire were the perfect hosts - just excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2010

Joe carol stayed at the sunningdale last weekend. It was just perfect. This has been the second time that we have stayed there, and we will continue coming back time and time again. We were made ever so welcome and the staff were very friendly. The bedroom was first class and and the bed was very comfortable. We slept in on our final morning for breakfast, but paul and claire had left the breakfast buffet open for us even though it was after 10.30 am. Who else would do this. We would certainly recommend this hotel anytime and would also like to thank paul and claire for their hospitality.

Regards
carol and Joe Hall

This is the second time we have visited this year and both times we have found the owners and their staff extremely warm and welcoming. The service was very efficient and the food is amazing! We did not venture out to try other places to eat, why would you when you have everything in the hotel that you need.
This is the perfect hotel suitable for all and is in such a lovely setting near to Bamburgh Castle. What more could you want?

The welcome was friendly and the attic bedroom seemed acceptable, fairly basic although it had a new en-suite ( broken lock on the door though and with a weak shower.)
When we went to get in bed, there was a thin sheet covering the cheapest mattress under which you could feel every spring and lumpy pillows to match.
Breakfast was fine and i wouldn't have bothered writing a review - just wouldn't have recommended the place if people had asked me. It was the owners derogatory remark about our home county that really annoyed me! To call our lovely Roman town of Colchester a "Godforsaken place " i found quite insulting to paying guests - I'm sure our wonderful soldiers at Colchester Garrison don't sleep on an excuse for a mattress like we did - let alone pay £110 for the "privilege"!
Not surprised there's no photos of this place!

I'm sorry to read that you found our beds uncomfortable, the mattress in this room is a firm Gortex lined type and is not to everyones liking. The hotel recently changed its policy for mattresses and is now supplied a softer close sprung mattress. If this had of been pointed out to a member of the hotel staff a matteress topper could have been placed on the bed. As for the comment made by the hotel manager, these comments (if said) have perhaps been taken out of context. Our previous reviews show that we pride our business on a good customer relations.

Stayed at the sunningdale on 2 occasions while working in the area. Each stay lasting a week, as there was a few of us staying on both occasions we were made very welcome and the staff made us feel at home. Food was excellent all cooked by the owner everything on the menu comes highly recommended. No problems or complaints with my room very spacious and comfortable. Bamburgh is a beautiful location and if you want that home from home feel then the Sunningdale is the place to stay.

The location within Bamburgh is fine, but anywhere else would be as well. It's a small town where everything is close to the beach and castle. Website needs updating to reflect the lack of chef and therefore any meals other than self-serve breakfast. Breakfast was ok. Comfortable bed. Lounge not comfy or inviting unless you wish to share with the staff watching reality tv whilst chomping a bowl of cereal. I'd say ideal for schools. Barbara, Harrogate.

Thank for you for your comments. We act on all comments made on tripadvisor and as a result of your comments we've stopped our staff using the guest facilities. This should have never happened. We do normally always have a chef on duty and this can be clearly seen when looking at other reviews. However the weekend that you visited we had a family bereavement and this should have been pointed out to you on arrival. Should you wish to return to The Sunningdale then a superior room on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis will be waiting for you free of charge.

Regards

Paul Mather

We spent one night in this hotel and found it very poor value for money. I advise you to check which room you will be given and if it is in the attic overlooking the road - turn it down. It was awful, and felt like it could be staff quarters. Dark, horrible furniture, the bed was awful and so was the bathroom. We had a dog with us but even so we had lovely rooms on each of the other nights on our 3 night stay in the Northumberland area. (see reports for the Pack Horse Inn, Ellingham - which was cheaper than the Sunningdale, and the Tankersville Arms, Eglingham which was about £25 per night more expensive and absolute luxury at every level).
The room we were in surely must be the last to be updated and until it is DO NOT USE THIS ROOM.

Thank you for your comments, our Hotel is currently under refurbishment. As we are only a small family run business, financial restraints depict that we are unable to renew all our rooms at once. Please accept my apologies and should you wish to return then a newly refurbished room will be waiting for you free of charge for a two night booking. As a result of your comments this room has now been taken out of our booking system.
