“Loved Bamburgh! Memorable Stay at the Mizen Head”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2008

We have travelled a lot and been to fantastic and horrible places! First time in Bamburgh and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay than at the Mizen Head Hotel. We searched on trip-advisor and then checked the website which had a lack of pictures shame because the place is just great. When we were there they had live music! Fantastic night! We will be back for the dark nights in December to be sitting next to the real log fire, definitely on our rank of best places to stay! Our bedroom standard double, classic decoration very clean bathrooms (this is my weakness I always check bathrooms, could not be better still with the smell of paint!!!!! Spotless!!!!! Homemade food with a gold winning award now! Staff always helpful as some of the comments in trip-advisor show, a very rare combination, staff and owners being so friendly! We made friends with the owners (Chris and Ken). They have been through some refurbishment. Good luck owners/staff and success as deserved, see you soon! Will be back for the amazing pizzas!!!!!!!!

We were very disappointed upon arrival having researched this hotel on trip advisor and also looked at their website. Our room was very small (photos of more expensive, superior rooms on website.) although it was clean and recently refurbished.

However the biggest problem was the noise. The room was over the bar which was very noisy until after 12.30 at night and having gone for a quiet weekend away was disappointing. Also the walls of the room are extremely thin so you can hear every noise from the neighbouring room eg turning light on, flushing toilet, snoring.

Location of hotel is good and staff were friendly but it is not a quiet country hotel.

Recently given a makeover this is a most delightful place to stay.
Excellent taste in the design and furnishings of the bedrooms & public rooms complement the charming & helpful staff.
This combined with the owner who is an excellent receptionist, barman, talented artist and fine musician make for a memorable stay.
I almost forgot about the generous portions of wholesome Northumbrian fayre & real ales

We visited The Mizen Head Hotel in February 2008 to find accommodation for our daughter's wedding. It had been difficult to contact them by email or phone as they were in the middle of a complete refurbishment. Chris and Ken were very welcoming considering they were so busy and showed us the hotel and explained what it would look like when finished. We were very impressed with their plans, so we arranged for our daughter and fiance to go and have a look too.
The booking was made for all the rooms for the 7th & 8th August for the wedding taking place in the castle on the 8th. Chris kept in touch and a meal was arranged for about 30 on the evening before. During the two days we were there all the staff helped us with preparations for the wedding and Ken kept the bar open until the last guest went to bed! We used the hotel as a nerve centre and other relatives and friends were able to come to visit and were made very welcome.
The evening meal was a great success as was the wedding, we couldn't have had a better day, everything was perfect!

The Mizen Head Hotel is one of those rarest of things. It is a small and intimate hotel that it is just impossible to fault.

It is located on the western fringes of the stunningly pictuesque village of Banburgh which in turn is dominated by probably the worlds best preserved Norman Castle.

The hotel has been recently extended and upgraded. The rooms are stunning and feature quality fixtures and soft furnishings obviously coordinated by a creative and visionary interior designer.

The restaurant/bar(pity these weren't seperate) is light and welcoming and the menu sublime. The wine list complements the food perfectly and although a little limited is priced very competatively indeed.

Kenneth, his wife and staff are both helpfull and discreet(often a difficult balance) and are willing to offer advice on the many wonderfull opportunities afforded by Englands last truly rural county. Don't miss the castle.Don't miss Seahouses and the stunning Old Ship Inn. Don't miss a boat trip out to the Farne islands and try to see one of the other local market towns(eg. Belford or Wooler).

I stay in loads of hotels for business purposes and I believe that this makes me overly critical of hotels when it comes to spending my own money.

I cannot be critical of the Mizen Head. My wife and I simply loved every minute there and look forward to returning soon.

Alistair.Robertson.

If reviewing this hotel ignore evrything prior to 2008 - the refurbishment completed early in 2008 has left an well-appointed, modern and very welcoming environment with very friendly owners and staff. Having two dogs we chose the hotel because of it's dog-friendly attitude and were not disappointed as they were made to feel as welcome as all the two-legged guests.
The choice of beers, wines and spirits was impressive and the food was excellent is quality and quantity.

  • Liked — great attidue to dogs
  • Disliked — lack of ventilation in our room

We went to the mizen head for a drink in May and got talking to the owners who made us feel so welcome that we booked a 2 night stay in July! The service is very personal and friendly. The hotel itself is lovely inside. Food was great! i highly recommend the lamb and the pizza's!!! We were sad to leave!
