“Relaxed stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

The atmosphere in this hotel/restaurant is very informal and relaxed, with what may appear to some as a slightly dated decor in the public areas. Service, however, is efficient and friendly; and this seems to encourage guests to socialise more amongst themselves.

Our room (or suite) was large, clean and well-furnished, with a spacious well-appointed bathroom (both bath and separate shower cubicle).

The highlight of the stay was the dinner each evening - an interesting menu (more game perhaps than often encountered) with dishes being very well thought out, cooked and presented. The wine list included a good selection of decent wines in the £20 to £25 range, without the huge mark up so often imposed; a selection of local bottled beers was welcome.

One negative point (and the reason for not awarding top marks - 4.5 would probably be a more accurate reflection overall) is the somewhat regimented way of serving dinner - tables at quarter hour intervals from 6.30 to 8.30. Arriving at 5.45 to be told that the only remaining slots were 6.30 and 8.30 meant a choice between very rushed preparations and a long wait. My advice would be to reserve a time for dinner when booking the hotel.

Overall, however, this was a very pleasant stay offering good food and relaxation.

Stayed here for three nights for family gathering, 16th May , there were six of us . We had four rooms and each was different , well maintained and spotless; no faults.

The meals were excellent , particularly the evening dinners which were top class - compliments to the chef and his team. The wine list was extensive and very reasonably priced.

From arriving to departing all the hotel staff were friendly and obliging with nothing being too much trouble . We were definitely looked after .

An excellent , well run family hotel of a high standard . The decor a little quirky in the lounge areas. We would not hesitate to return and definitely recommend this hotel .

Thanks for a lovely stay

We were a bit sceptical about this hotel to start with. The decor is old-fashioned and it feels rather cluttered with knick-knacks, some of dubious quality. Also one of the rooms had a slightly unpleasant smell. And lots of hotels make a big fanfare of their cooking, only to disappoint in reality. BUT... we tracked the smell to a wicker chair, which was removed promptly and curteously. The hotel really is dog-friendly, which for us, means an outside hose, a room big enough to put a crate in, and grounds (not large, but adequate) which we could let our spaniel rummage around in. The food really is as good as it claims to be, largely, and we are fairly critical. Our son has a serious nut allergy, which some kitchens just don't get the importance of, or they can't cope with it, but here it was dealt with in a way which gave us confidence, and we had no trouble. A minor criticism is that perhaps the breakfast quality didn't quite match the excellence of the dinner. We stayed in the outside rooms (because of the dog) which were not exciting, but were warm comfortable clean and functional. We had a comfortable stay, the staff were friendly, we enjoyed it, and we would recommend it. And it's in a good area for natural beauty, walks and so on.

Pleasant hotel and rooms. Food was good but for everyone as it is a dining experience. But we cut our stay short as the heating was turned off at night and as it was the end of March and below zero outside we were extremely cold at night in our room.

Room Tip: In the summer our room at the top of the house would be lovely with a nice view.

Stayed here on the 19th April 2014 for a birthday night away, we took our dog and had a room outside the main building with a shared outside courtyard/garden (shared only with one other room) this was an added bonus as dog owners and no charge for our dog. As mentioned by many the food staff and rooms are all amazing and I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel we will be back.

Stayed for a couple of nights, room was tastefully decorated, clean and comfortable.
Staff were excellent and couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome and well looked after.
The guests lounge and library area were comfortable and welcoming.
The food was excellent and worthy of recognition by the critics, each course was cleverly constructed with variations in taste, texture and colour by a kitchen team who clearly know what they are doing.
The service was extremely slick with dishes being served with almost military precision.
The grounds need a little TLC, I think that it will be quite sometime before anyone plays tennis in the court at the bottom of the walled garden!!
My wife is (unfortunately) a smoker, but the hotel has gone to the trouble of providing a warm garden room with comfortable chairs and an electric mock woodburner to allow smoking guests to not feel like social pariahs.
Very hard to find any faults, excellent value for what the hotel offers and will be looking to return in the future and staying in one of the Suites.

We visited a week ago to dine with friends who were staying at the hotel.
The meal began with a delicious soup before moving on to the starter, followed by sorbet.
Next was main course and finally devine pudding. Included in the price was tea/coffee and chocolates filled with Alnwick rum.
Each course was beautifully presented and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Our friends enjoyed their stay too

Room Tip: Our friends asked for a room with a view.
