“Chilling experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

Well worth the entrance fee and suggest that future visitors should also include a visit to see The Chillingham wild cattle.A castle of character some rooms quite spooky, especially the dungeons and torture chamber.
We spent over four hours looking around the castle which is full of oddities and things of interest.
Why not have a visit to the Tea rooms good food and a roaring log fire.

“Great Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2013

Very authentic castle. Not as touristy as Alnwick Castle, which was good for us. Some rooms have a very eerie feel. Lovely tea room to sit in near the fire. Gardens are nice to explore

“Not really what we expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

Have been meaning to visit Chillingham Castle for a number of years so when it came up on Groupon, it prompted a friend to book for us and to make the concerted effort and go!!!

We waited for a fine day and it was lovely and sunny, but very cold, as we wanted to see the cattle and the grounds.

When we arrived we were somewhat perplexed as to where we should go – went into a make-do car park but there were no signs to say where we should go from there. It was a long walk down a very impressive drive to get to the Castle itself as only disabled parking was allowed beside the property. If you have someone who can’t walk very far, would suggest you drop them off!! However, I wouldn’t advise taking someone who is slightly unsure on their pins as there’s a lot of climbing of rickety steep stairs to get to the castle rooms, toilets and tea room.

It opens at 12noon so we decided to get there and have an early lunch rather than stop for a coffee on the way (our journey was about 1hr 40mins). The tea room was very cold so didn’t take off our outdoor clothes, although there was a very large appealing fire and the food on offer was scrumptious, although, apart from the daily special, a little pricey.

Chillingham is a very old, historical and out of the ordinary property and it is obvious that it’s privately owned and run. It does seem a little higgledy piggledy but the history is interesting and the staff, once you get into the main rooms, are very pleasant and informative. There’s a lot of climbing up and down very steep stairs but it’s worth it just to see the difference between the rooms that have been restored and those that haven’t. The dungeons would be a great place to take my young nephew but not sure how much else would keep his interest.

I can imagine that’s it’s a great place to have a haunted party!!

“Amazing !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013 via mobile

Visited for the first time last year and fell in love ! Revisited in October and was equally impressed. I love the atmosphere, the random placing of things and the wonderful sense of history. And, you can touch things ! Unopened letters from Buckingham Palace, a note from Jools Holland, such personal things and a privilege to see. I just get the sense that Chillingham is a really loved home, and, the work that has gone into restoring it really shows. Not just about the building, I love to see the adventures that the family have experienced. And , last year, I spoke to the owner - a special memory for me ! As for the haunting stories, last year I did feel slightly unsettled by a certain view, but this year, the only sense it gave me was peace. I love Northumberland and will always visit Chillingham - know it will never disappoint.
