Description: Open every day except Christmas Day, 9:30-17:00. (Last orders for hot food, 16:00 Winter; 16:30 Summer) The Station Buffet is owned and operated by Barter Books - one of the largest secondhand bookshops in Britain and the home of the famous Keep Calm and Carry On poster. The inviting ambiance includes an open fire in three of the rooms, while the menu specializes in the owners' own preference for comfort food at its best - all of which is home-made, using local produce whenever possible. This ranges from soups to bacon sandwiches to Northumbrian rarebit to baked goods to die for! Also on offer: barista coffee, teas, hot chocolate - and, yes, wine, too!

“Tasty and very friendly service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

We had a light lunch, me soup, hubby quiche. We were very full at the end as food was delicious and portion sizes huge. We think Alnwick may be catering for people who have very large appetites. But we know now and will share as it was absolutely lovely.

“Fruit cake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

I only ordered a pot of tea and a piece of fruit cake, but the rest of the menu looked good and the prices were very reasonable. There was plenty of tea, and the only problem I had with the fruit cake was that I really couldn't cut it with the fork provided; it was just too big and too packed with fruit - apricots, sultanas, cherries... I gave up and used my fingers. It kept me going til our evening meal!

“Thoroughly recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

Recently spent a day exploring Alnwick whilst on our first-ever visit to wonderful Northumberland and what a great time we had pottering and looking and simply enjoying. Great fun. The icing on the cake was our time spent in Barter Books. What an excellent, fascinating place. Could loose oneself there for hours! Husband and I so enjoyed the experience. We also simply couldn't resist lunch in the Station Buffet. Gorgeous, tasty food and certainly very goodly sized portions. Spoiled for choice and all absolutely delicious. Lovely, friendly, helpful staff throughout.

“a blast from the past around each corner.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

we visited Barter Books a couple of times and found it inspiring, every format of book was there and some pretty pricey jobs there were too. but! i can highly reccomend the Buffet Cafe at the back, their food and drink is second to none and at a very reasonable price to boot.
try the bacon butties....Wow!
great coffee and tea to accompany the food and such friendly staff as well... going again as soon as i get back to Alnwick.
