8 of us stopped Wednesday June 19th after completing 2nd hard day of c2c. Food and service superb. Our room had 4 of us in, it was clean but basic but ideal for 1 night. Shower was a bit iffy ie scalding or freezing but down to poor water supply. Would definitely stop here again.

I've never given a poor review before but this place is less than basic. The rooms weren't clean. Pubic hair in the bathroom, a daddy long legs in the shower, damp in the bathrooms, scum in the toothbrush cups, a fur coat on the skirting boards, dirty marks on the doors and walls, bits of loo roll on the carpet. I saw a few of the rooms and they were much of a muchness. The bar is fine and the food was nice. I just think, why stay there when it costs no more to stay somewhere clean? I would look for somewhere else next time.

For the second year running, the staff managed to feed 40 people in one service. Even Gordon Ramsey would struggle with that. We were then permitted to annex the games room and be as raucous as we liked until closing time. The wonderful landlady, Ann, was most accommodating and even joined in with merrymaking. All you could ask for in a C2C stopover, especially if you are 40 drunken Mackems who like to sing Yellow Submarine ad infinitum.

We were a bit anxious about staying here because of poor reviews from a year or two ago. However, it turned out fine. Lovely building, warm welcome. Male staff were helpful (but a bit taciturn). The hostess was much more welcoming and bubbly. Food was very good traditional pub food (can recommend the battered black pudding and steak pie with suet crust pastry - wonderful). Very large portions too! The room was a bit less than adequate; rather tatty with signs of some damp and the mattress was a bit lumpy. Good breakfast.

Stayed in Allenheads camping on our second night in on the coast to coast cycle. Had to ring up and book a table in advance as there must have been many coast to coasters booked in to eat that night. Thought it may be expensive due to it being really the only place to have food out in Allenshead, but turned out to be really good value.

Great service and good food. Recommend

A warm welcome, great food and real ales. A traditional pub in a beautiful place that offer great hospitality.
I didn't stay in the rooms but the landlady was very kind and let us pitch our tent in her garden as it was an unexpected stop on our C2C bike ride
