“Good hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2010

Good professionally run hotel. Small gym and pool for guest use which were busy at peak times. Large bar area, full of business folk during the day but very quiet at weekends.
Just one warning, there is a bit of a rip off going on. The room service menue is £1 extra compared to the identical bar menu, and they add a £2 tray charge. Not good, not clever. Lack of free wifi in a business hotel also a major disadvantage.

You usually know what to expect with Holiday Inn's and this was much of the standard fare.

Check in was painless and efficient, with well mannered and friendly staff. The hotel is actually quite large once inside, but everything is easily signposted and accessible.

I was quite surprised by the size of my room - it was much smaller than other holiday inn's I've stayed at through the years, but it was comfortable and completely sufficient for the purposes of my stay.

We took an evening meal in the restaurant and service was again professional, quick and efficient. The food was of a good standard and was reasonably priced - as was the wine we took with our meal.

Breakfast in the morning was enjoyable, well cooked and tasty.

Overall, the price was reasonable, the stay enjoyable and comfortable and the food and service standards of a good standard throughout. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel to other business travelers or those needing a convenient stop off from their travels along the M1.

Outside this is a rather dated hotel - I remember it from way back when it was a post house - but it's been extensively refurbished and inside teh public areas ar smart and welcoming. The rooms are pretty well furnished - but standard laminate furniture. Comfortable bed and pillows, coffee and tea, free water and a kitkat. Bathroom was functional but perfectly adequate. Only negative was the walls needed a re-paint. Big plus was the very pleasant and helpful staff. We paid just £30 for the room - excellent value but breakfast wasn't included - an extra £13 each - but actually that wasn't bad value for an extensive spread with eggs cooked to order and again very helpful, smiling and pleasant staff.

First time at a holiday inn this year - far from impressed upon my return

-Jaded facade
-Given wrong room at check-in and consequently walked in on another guest in their room. No real apology back at reception
-Tatty room - damaged door with gap, light swtiches pushed into wall, air con not working and room overheated without able to open window, old television with poor tuning of channels, toilet flush not working correctly

Won't be heading back

Positives:
- Good breakfast (up tot the Holiday Inn standard)
- Friendly welcome at the reception desk and recognition of priotiy club status
- Free parking
- Reasonably quiet

Negatives
- Room was a bit on the basic side compared to the usual HI standards. It was rather small and looked like it could do with a little modernising (a flat screen TV would be a start!)
- Room uncomfortably hot which was silly considering it was October! Air conditioning wasn't working (presumably switched off for the winter) in spite of the fact it was still rather warm (around 18 degrees Celcius that weekend)
- Apart from verbal recognition as a PC member (Platinum status) at check-in there were no benefits: no room upgrade, no free drink, no gift in the room. Thishasn't happened to me in a HI for a while!
- V expensive internet & no free wifi in the lobby - this is increasingly common even in Holiday Inn Expresses!
- Worst of all no priority club reward points posted! Presumably this was because I got a discounted rate but frankly this is dissapointing as I've paid around the same in other HI and Crowne Plaza hotels and always received the credit!

Stayed with family on a short break and used the Hotel as a base to explore area. Tried checking in at 12.40 to be abruptly told check in was 2pm. No thought to pre registration or can we take your luggage. Don't book as room only as you are interrogated and treated like a criminal at breakfast time. By the way you name is "room number" not Mr or Mrs. Had to have room key cut four times and someone attempted to gain access to room saying they had just checked in. Plenty of door slamming by other guests which reverberates right round the Hotel. Would definitely not stay here again, staff not friendly, Hotel noisy and procedure gets in the way of service.
