“faulty towers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2011

On arrival at the windmill hotel we were greeted at reception by the chef in his chefs whites, not what you normally expect. We were shown to our room, which on first impressions was very small but clean and seemed newly refurbished. However, the tv had never been tuned in to any channels and i soon gave up after 10 mins trying. The toilet seat was loose to the extent that it was almost falling off! Once in the bar it was soon clear that the one bar staff was struggling to cope with the handful of customers in there. She was checking guests in, serving drinks and changing the barrels, while i twice queued up for drinks , to a bar devoid of anyone. At the end of the evening we were asked to go to our rooms as a different bar maid wanted to go home. Amazing! However, the breakfast was fresh, hot with plenty of fresh tea and coffee, once again served by the same girl who was serving saturday lunch. Overall, i think that with more, trained hotel staff, this would be a nice place to stay the night.

I really love this site as it provides me with perfect information to be able to improve what we do. Thank you for your Frank and honest comments that were acted upon after you left as the previous review said the identical piece about staff levels. We are only a small hotel with limited funds and like fawlty towers most staff multi-task. But we do need to have more staff on place at certain times of the day and this is now totally evident. I am very new to this type of business and I learn very quickly, and although we will never be 100% efficient we have to get as close to this as possible as everyone has different tastes and standards and we will never please everyone all of the time. I do wish however you would have brought the toilet seat to our attention as we could have rectified that immediately.
On you point about the bar being closed early at 12.30 that is something that should never have happened. You are guests of the hotel and it is treated as if you were at home and you should be allowed to drink until whenever you want, even if it is only orange squash. That problem has been addressed already and only this last yesterday I kept the bar open for residence until 4am. Responsible drinking of course.....

Just returned from 1 nights stay at the Windmill. The check in reception was unmanned on arrival (15.15pm), as the receptionist/barmaid/waitress was busy elsewhere. When 'Jenny' did turn up, she was very pleasant and chatty as she checked us in and took us up to our room.
Service at the bar was extremely slow as only Jenny seemed to be working that day, checking guests in, serving behind the bar, serving food and even finding time to change the beer barrels, while her supervisor sat watching the TV in the bar!

The room itself was basic, but clean, and appeared newly refurbished. The ensuite shower room was also clean and practical, with a large single shower cubicle. The room had a flat screen TV with Sky.

We cannot comment on the food in the restaurant as we ate at the other pub in the village (5 minutes walk away), but the breakfast could not be faulted, with an endless supply of tea/coffee and toast to accompany our full English.

Many thanks for your review. We have just started to open all day on a Saturday and it is clear that we do require more staff for these days. Like all comments they are very useful to be able to put into operation changes that are needed. We are still ironing out all the glitches but are working positively to make this one of the best establishments in the area.
Most people who work in this industry at establishments of this size multitask and sometimes that becomes impossible to get the right service level at a particular time. I will always increase staff where required and Saturday afternoon now needs extra hands.
Once again thank you and hopefully see you again soon.

If you are travelling with your canine friend this pub hotel is one for you. The whole place is of a very high standard and dogs are welcome except in the dinning room. However, you can eat in the bar with your pooch. There is sky tv and wifi. The staff are helpfull and eficient and the beer/food excellent.. Go in march/april and go see the beautiful bluebell woods just up the road on the knightly way.

Thank you for your kind review. Our main concern is service and this is what makes a place that little bit more special. Our food is excellent, our beer is up to scratch which are the two parts that should always be right in a bar/restaurant. So if you can get the service side correct then I believe that you might just have a place that stands out from the rest. We still have bits to work on as per the previous listing but most of these are small technical issues that will be addressed and resolved.

I visited the Windmill for a weekend as part of a group of 12 friends (and a dog) for a walking weekend. I could not fault the enthusiasm with which we were looked after - nothing seemed to be too much bother for the staff, and although the weekend was not without it's faults (running out fruit juice at breakfast, struggling to operate TVs etc.) we will definately be going back there again next year.

On our particular visit we ate on the Friday night in the restaurant and in a room off the pub for Sunday lunch. Both meals were top notch and great value. The staff very kindly let us hold on to our rooms until after lunch on the Sunday so we could all get changed out of our wet walking clothes - something that many other places we have styaed at would not even contemplate.

The facilities appear to all be brand new and though the pub lacks the comfort and atmosphere of a more traditional pub - I'm sure it will get better with age. The bedrooms were all excellent and well kitted out, the beer was very good and the food excellent. All in all fantastic value for money.

I cannot believe the amount of orange juice you get through. I had to get some more at lunch time and make sure that there was enough for the rest of Daventry. But there is nothing better than a good brisk walk and plenty of orange juice after a late night session of good real ale. (note to self -there are other people, like you, that require two gallon of OJ after the night before)
I am really pleased that our service level was up to scratch as I believe that we need to get this right and allowing you to keep your rooms is not a major issue and just gives you that feeling that you are at home.
The refit has taken away alot of the old character but over time I think we can put in a new set, that will be just as traditional and this will take a couple of years.
I spoke with one of your group and he told me that he was really looking forward to the shower after his walk as we have added pumps to them which make it a proper shower.

We stayed on a Friday and Saturday night, and the place was crazy busy. All the staff did well, and were obviously very caring and very anxious to get every-thing right. The dinner was all excellent and arrived very quickly.
52 walkers all had their lunch there on Saturday, so we kept out of the way.
Steve the manager even let my son watch his football match in the bar later on, which meant a lot to the lad, and was very good of him.
The village is very pretty and friendly and a lot of the people their on the Friday night seemed to live locally and to know each other.

Thank you for taking the time to write this email. I am really glad that I was able to accommodate your sons needs especially when there were other people wanting to watch the rugby (which is my preferred choice), but your sons request was the first one and it was the obvious choice as the other game was Leicester Tigers, and we are in Northampton anyway.....
It was certainly a full on weekend and we are getting the majority of things correct and intend to continue improving all aspects. Hope to see you again Soon for another visit...

We stayed here after attending a wedding up the road. It is clearly newly refurb'd with the rooms being very clean and modern. The bed was firm as where the pillows ( too firm for me but others may like a very firm pillow). There wasn't a tv in the room nor wifi access anywhere - hopefully these are planned! Tea and coffee facilities were in the room but only enough for one round of two cups- I'm sure we could've got more if we asked. The rooms feel as they need the small finishing touches to be done but otherwise they are fine for the price. Breakfast was lovely and all staff were friendly and very helpful. We'd definitely use it again which is the best recommendation we can give.

Thank you very much for your opinions as they are such a help for us to make your stay perfect. Televisions are due in this week and will be backed up with a sky package that offers sky movies to the rooms on an individual basis. We are producing an information pack for each room that will give you the option of softer pillows that are available. I personally prefer more neck support and went for these type in the rooms, but brought other pillows to cater for all tastes.
I think you are correct, having tea making facilities in the room enough for just 1 cup is not good and will be addressed today. Plus wifi is ordered and will be available in the near future. Thanks again for your review and you are spot on with your last comment as word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising that I can get. Steve weeks

Been to the restaraunt three times now since it was reopened.
The food is fine and the waitresses lovely. The rest is total chaos. Front of house doesnt know whether she is coming or wenting. Wine list is interesting but nobody knows if they have it and if they do where it is. what used to be a pleasant meal out under the old regime has become a stress inducing experience.
We will try again in a month or so if no better we will not bother any more.

Ladies toilets are in desperate need of refurbishment portaloos would be better say our girls.

I really appreciate your comments as all feedback is looked at and acted upon. With regards to the comments about my staff then they will be noted and talked to as the service level we provide must be one of the key issues we get completely right. You are very correct with your comments on the ladies toilets as all we have done to them is to remove the carpets and get them painted. Since I took over in October we have totally refurbished the place and my priority was to get the bar, snug, restaurant and hotel up and running and to this we have achieved 85% success. The kitchen was refitted and over the next 6 months the ladies toilets will be refurbished and brought up to the standard. Now we have the drains sorted we at least have clean and functioning toilets. I am always willing to talk to customers as are the senior members of my staff and appreciate constructive feedback. We have been open for only three months and yes there are still teething problems, but we will sort them out. I think we offer great food pleasant surroundings and good beverages, on which note the wine list is not quite finished yet and like anything good needs time to mature and once finished I believe will cater to all tastes.
