“Good value but disappointing breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013 via mobile

Stayed for one night. Nice country pub with nice owners and the room was good. Evening meal was nice - great chips! Only disappointment was breakfast. We were leaving at 8am before breakfast started so were told that they would set us up a continental breakfast so we could help ourselves, which we understood. In the morning we had cereal with bread and jam - not even a toaster to toast the bread! Left feeling very hungry and disappointed! Nice place to stay if you have time to stay for a fry up.

My wife and I stayed two nights last week at the Star. We'd booked via Late Rooms. We had an en-suite room which was spotless, as was most of the rest of the pub. The food was fine, staff very friendly (unlike the other village pub, the Blue Bell!) and locals seemed cheery enough. Beware tall people, as there a few places you might bump your head and there are steps everywhere. Emergency Exit signage need improving throughout, but would go back willingly. Beer great too!

I have time over the past year been able to make a good honest assessment of the Star Inn. I call in most weeks and have sampled a whole range of foods all of which have been cooked and served well with the homemade pizza standing out as some of the best outside Italy! The owners are always welcoming and have a range of theme nights, quizzes and live entertainment.

For me and those that like real ale then Will constantly rotates a number of Yorkshire beers with the Wold Top range standing out as a 'local' brew - all are always in excellent condition. They have good choice of house wine and bottled wines. I would recommend that you call in for a drink and a meal but do have a nominated driver because the refreshments easily get the better of you!

This was a last minute trip with my teenage son for an overnight stay in the area. All that was required was dinner, a bed and breakfast. We got more than that, TV and drinks in the room, friendly staff, a late dinner (the stone baked, home made pizza was huge) and free WiFi t'boot. There was even a wine and cheese event and the pub was buzzing.

Both the owners took time to speak with us on the evening. We even had breakfast prepared for us an hour before the scheduled start time.

I had read a poor review on this hotel, it didn't put me off, as usual there is always the odd person that can't be satisfied and this appears to be the case. If I were vegan there would have been plenty of choice. Special diets are that, special and therefore need planning for. Let the chef know in advance and the food can be ordered for you.

There are reviews that say TLC is required. This may be the case but they have only just purchased the place and are in the process of updating. The restaurant is very nicely decorated The budget room we stayed in has some wallpaper that is "out of fashion" but there are plans to upgrade.

Room Tip: Call and ask the owners for any specific requirements, they seem only too helpful to ensure you enjo...

The wife and I stayed for one night. The bed was really comfortable, we had a great night's sleep and if you enjoy the countryside it doesn't get much better than this. The food was gorgeous - I'm a pizza lover but was torn between pizza (baked in a genuine pizza oven imported from Italy) and steak. In the end I went for the latter and did not regret it. Thankfully the wife went for the pizza option so I made sure to help myself to some of hers. Will and Ali have flexible approach to cater for different customer requirements - as an example when we went to check out another couple came for their Sunday lunch. Will explained that they no longer offer Sunday lunch but went out of his way to see if they couldn't serve up a meal anyway as they had some beef left still. I believe this is the sort of bespoke service that goes a long way with people nowadays, in a world of chain pubs and fast food restaurants. We were both really impressed to see what they've both managed to build up of what was essentially a derelict old pub when they first took to it about a year ago. Well worth a visit!

Room Tip: Room 1 would be particularly suited for a family as it boats five beds.

Owner Will and his staff are very friendly and their pub has a great atmosphere with live music. The evening meal and freshly made pizza was great and very good size portions too. Breakfast was very good quality too and nice and hot just as it should be. The room we stayed in was a good size with the usual amenities and beds were very comfortable. The room carpet could do with changing as it damaged on the stair which is a bit dangerous with kids. The bathroom was nice and clean but needs updating,a little TLC would make it an even better stay,( although this did not ruin our stay) and we would definitely recommend and will be staying again when in the area.

We stayed here for one night. The reason it is difficult to rate is because the owners have the pub part spot one,The staff were friendly, the pizza was very nice, hand pulled beer kept well and to top it off a great live band. On the down side I feel it needs a good spruce up, the carpets wear filthy which I could over look if it was just in the pub - after all it is a country pub, muddy boots etc etc. Plus everything else was very clean. But it was also dirty in the bedroom and bathroom - all the carpet needs is a good clean. We paid little for the room at £47 b and b for two, so we expected a budget room which is what we got. I believe other rooms are much nicer. The owner was lovely and did say if they hadn't been full he would have automatically given us a better room.
Please don't let this review put you off going it is not mean't too, it is a nice pub and we would go there again if we were in the area.

Room Tip: Not room 4 unless you like a very hot room - it has the combi boiler in it
