on arriving it looked very nice.but the receptionist was not bothered if we were there or not.the room was basic but tidy,no remote for tv but as bbc1 was the only channel we did not need one,the whole building is in need of a make over, especially the manager, his attitude towards people was not nice.he may have been having a bad day.we were there for a evening wedding reception so can not comment on evening meal, but the buffet was very nice.the bar staff and waitresses at the hotel were very nice.breakfast was good but had to waite a good 10 mins to be seen to,as we were the only ones in the room it did not bear well.but as she was one of the staff from last night we will let her off.would we go back again - may be if at the race course.

Stayed here for 1 week and on the first morning The waitress slept in so the breakfast was 1 hour late as i could not get into the dining room as the chef went and kicked her out of bed. There was no milk for cereal or orange juice but when the chef got my food to me it was very nice and hot. I dont think they will make this mistake again. Appart from that there is a tendancy to have load music at night downstairs so if you are revising, like I was it is impossible to do so. The staff do not really say alot to the occupiers on passing.

Room Tip: Stay out of the front rooms as you are in front of a major road junction that keeps on going all nig...

The hotel is on a busy road junction and the outside looks grubby because of it, but inside its spotless and the sound proofing minimises the traffic noise. The place itself has 500 years of history, and creaky floorboards and repairs that prove it. The decor seems to be just as it was put on in the 1960's so its like going in to a time warp! (The locals in the bar look as if they are extras for "Heartbeat" too)
That having been said the welcome was warm, the food hot, tasty and plentiful (I put on 4lb in 3 days), the alcohol well kept and well chosen, and I found my room warm (It was -7c outside) and the water hot, though a friend staying complained his shower was cold. We did all get up at the same time and there is a nice note in the bathroom apologising for the fact the plumbing came with the building.
This isn't a posh hotel, but it's a homely one, and one where you feel that they want to enjoy it.

stayed here for just one night , staff were very nice exept for the manageress who was very rude and even turned down a tip after breakfast (very awkward) , the food was very nice ,the breakfast was excelent. the room was large clean and comfortable as this was a family room ,but very noisy with the traffic. there are plenty of function rooms and the large one very nice for weddings if not a bit cold ,(it was freezing outside). there is plenty of off road parking with easy access to the A1. All in all a nice hotel and would only go back if it had a new manager.

Room Tip: stay away from the main road

We recently stayed here for one night while visting family in Catterick. We wanted something that was good value and looked at the nearby Travel Lodge initially. As we have 3 children we would have needed to book 2 rooms there(because of their ages) but here we booked a large, clean family room (number 5) for about the same money and including breakfast. The room was a great size and lay out for a family (two rooms on different levels knocked into one witha bathroom) comfortable, warm and very quiet- there was a dance going on in the bar and other guests staying but we did not hear a thing.
The only down side was that we had been told breakfast was earlier than it was and when we arrived in the dining room an hour early it was made obvious that the staff were unhappy. However they did serve us and the food was very nice. Sadly again on paying the service was poor, we were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay/if there were any problems or made to feel we would be welcomed back particularly.
In all though the hotel was just what we needed for a night's stay, good value, clean, comfortable and practical for a family to stop off in.

Room Tip: number 5- practical for a family of 4/5 (3rd child bed was a z-bed)
