“Fab food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

We had an evening meal here as we were staying nearby and this place was recommended to us...and we were not disapointed! The service was great and the food was gorgeous, especially the homemade chips. And the portions were huge despite only ordering a 'small' lasagne! Would recommend to anyone as long as they have a healthy appetite!

I can not fault this hotel. Centrally located in Richmond. Great food in the bar all served with a happy smiling face. A great choose of beers to be had. The breakfast are massive a great start to any working day. A definite return if in the area again.

I have stayed in many Pubs and Hotels all over England and Scotland and this rates as one of the best 5 anywhere, Comfortable clean rooms, nothing is a problem to any of the staff who are welcoming and friendly, the Bar food is well cooked, quality ingredients and the portions are "Man sized" overall a great place to stay at very affordable prices.
I have used the "Turf" many times since my first visit 16 years ago.

Went for lunch today and was underwhelmed by the menu. Menus looked dated and a bit tatty. Also felt the choice wasn't very varied, could have got the same in a weatherspoons, and more. I WAS SO WRONG!
The food was delicious. Perfectly cooked, really reasonably priced and very generous portions. I had the prawn platter to start. Loads of really nice juicy prawns with a pot of Marie Rose sauce, a warm bread roll and really fresh and lovely dressed salad. (Not the usual wilted iceberg lettuce with some over ripe tomatoes that I usually find with pub food)
My husband had the soup. Leek and Stilton, again with a warm bread roll. It was delicious.
For main I had the smokey joe. (Chicken breast wrapped in bacon with cheese and a BBQ sauce). This was, again, fantastic and very juicy. Not at all dry. It came with home made chips and another very fresh side salad.
My husband had the battered cod and chips. Wow! The fish was huge! The batter was perfectly cooked - crispy but not burnt.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful. For all this plus a side of cheesy garlic bread, a pint, a large wine and 2 large cokes the cost was only £38 which I think considering the quality is amazing.
Like some of the others who have reviewed the turf hotel, my husband also works for the MOD and has travelled the world, trying different meals and he can honestly say that this bar rates high in his list of favourite places. I, although not so well travelled, would have to agree.
Don't be put off by the small menus - the choice may not be huge but the quality of food and service is fantastic! Quality pub grub.

We had lunch in the bar. Food was served literally 5 mins after ordering. Not too expensive and the Sunday roast was delicious. Really high quality and big portions. Staff were very helpful. Would definitely come back. Caters for all ages. Well done!!

We were originally booked into the Castle Tavern only to be told on arrival that they had wrote the booking down on the wrong date and they were full. We were disappointed as our friends were booked in there. Credit to them though they couldn't apologise enough and rang The Turf Hotel and booked us in. The room was clean, coffee and tea well stocked and the bed comfortable. We decided to have a meal there on night and we weren't disappointed, service was good and food delicious. Only downside was as we stayed on a Saturday night when we came back in the pub was so full we could hardly get through the door. Was a bit loud until about 1 o clock but that didn't really bother us. The full English breakfast we had the next morning was very tasty and probably the best one we've had. Overall everything considered I think we got the best deal and would definately return if we in the area!
