“Excellent hotel, wonderful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

We visited Richmond in early December to attend a family funeral. I would like to thank Kem and Karen for their warmth and hospitality during our stay. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was outstanding freshly prepared and made using high quality ingredients and reasonably priced too. The waitress service and attention to detail was of the highest class. We decided to use the hotel as a venue for a gathering after the service and Kem provided a lovely buffet, again excellent quality and value. So if you are looking to hold a small to medium sized gathering then I couldn't recommend it highly enough. There is a large selection on both evening and breakfast menus with everything being freshly prepared. The rooms are clean, tidy and I had a very good nights sleep. The hotels location is right in the heart of Richmond, a 30 second stroll and you are in the market place. Don't spend too much time looking, comparing hotels in Richmond instsead just book in here as you wont find better.

Stayed again for a five day, twice yearly working visit to Richmond and yet again the high standards the proprietor Kem set himself when he took over earlier this year have been maintained, if not surpassed. The service is prompt and professional, the food is plentiful and reasonably priced, the rooms are comfortable and the staff are helpful, professional and eager to help in any way they can. All in all, having spoken to colleagues who were not lucky enough to get a room at the Black Lion it is clear that this establishment is probably, if not the place to stay if you are thinking of visiting Richmond. Regards to all..

I booked a weekend away for my wife`s birthday, and we were very impressed with the hotel, the room and especially the staff. My wife was given a lovely gift for her birthday, which was a thrill for her. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly, and the breakfast was cooked to perfection. We will definitely go back and recommend our friends to the hotel.

Spent the weekend here - main attraction was location, (1 min away from the market square) and it being a dog friendly hotel. Arrived to room to find 2 dog beds, 2 bowls and 2 sets of treats for our two furry friends (one large and one XXL). Heat was off when we arrived but that was quickly sorted, but other than that the room was very comfortable and clean. Staff were very friendly, hotel bar was good place for a quick pint or two with a good selection of real ales, breakfast was top notch. Spoke with the owners and you can tell they are taking real pride in bringing this hotel around to what it should be (recently changed hands from my understanding) by redoing the rooms and other upgrades. The owner told us to let her know when we stay again with the pooches and she'd make sure we have a bigger room. And the final touch - about week after we stayed, a envelope arrived in the post with a set of ipod headphones that we had accidentally left in the room...we didn't ever realize they were missing! Looking forward to another weekend in Richmond and will definitely be staying at the Black Lion!!!

I stayed here while walking the Coast to Coast from St Bees to Richmond. It was convenient and very comfortable. My single room was small, but about what I expected. The lounge was pleasant and had decent wifi. I was quite satisfied with my stay.

We stopped off for one night, and went to the Tourist Information to ask for a room. This hotel was recommended, and rightly so. It is bang in the middle of Richmond (small carpark at the back), a popular bar and restaurant by the looks of it, and has 14 very comfortable rooms, 4 star. We had room 10, overlooking Finkle street, it was a bit of a journey to get to it, but it was spacious, well furnished, clean, with bath/shower. We enjoyed the freshly cooked breakfast, and found the staf friendly and chatty. Free Wifi, too, such a nice touch.

We have stayed twice here in the past few months. The first time was in April just after the new owners arrived and the second time was at the end of June. Both stays where first class, we where made very welcome by all the staff. On our second visit we where greeted personally by Kem, the owner, and on this visit we had beautiful local biscuits waiting for us in our room, a token welcoming us back as returning guests which really did make us feel valued. Our room (the same one both visits) was lovely and spotlessly clean, and had everything we would need for our stay. Our room overlooked the cobbled streets of Richmond. It was nice to sit by the window and watch the world go by below. The food in the bar was excellent, we could not believe how good the choice of menu was and how high the quality of the food was as the prices where so low! The bar serves Guinness and my husband tells me this was so good you could have been in Dublin! They also had a good selection of wines, which I made a good stab at sampling! Breakfast was excellent, selection off cereals, fruits and yogurts followed by a lovely cooked breakfast, which was made fresh to order. We sat in the lovely breakfast room discussing what to do the rest of the day it was great no one rushing us out, instead offered us top ups off tea and coffee. Richmond itself is a lovely town with plenty to do in the area and a nice selection off shops, bars and cafes. Our 2nd visit was for our daughters graduation from Durham University which is only 30mins away. I am gad we stayed here as we avoided the inflated prices and traffic chaos in Durham. During our daughters 3 year degree course we traveled to visit her many times. I can honestly say the best place we stayed was The Black Lion and I am only sorry we did not discover it until her last term.
