“A tired scruffy hotel with demotivated staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2009

This is probably the worst hotel we have stayed in for many years. Some of the staff we abrupt, and there was a sense of not giving 2 hoots about giving a decent service. Perhaps this was due to them having to defend the indefensible as I will now report. We were shown up the threadbare carpets to a room that smelt of smoke, as did the corridor. The bathroom looked as if it hadn't been touched for 20 years and the whole room just looked dated and uncared for. We asked to change and were given a larger room which had a similar atmosphere to the first, but at least it did nor smell of smoke. The curtains pelmets were covered in thick dust, the mattress had a plastic incontinence sheet over it, the bathroom was dirty, rust on the shower curtain rail. a plastic sheet curtain, the wash hand basin was coming away from the wall, the toilet roll holder was lose, there was dust and dirt in all the more difficult to clean areas, the shelf next to the basin was sloping, all the fixtures and fittings were very old and looked it. There was no double glazing despite being on the road front, with the market stalls being erected at 5am. The wall paper was scuffed in numerous places. We paid 300 pounds for a double room and a single, for 2 nights; my son could have stayed in our room, but they were going to charge us a full adult price for this [which in itself makes no sense], so we opted to pay a bit more for him to have his own room. The breakfast wasn't bad, but the service was awful e.g. no one removed our plates after we had finished, so ended up doing it ourselves. We arrived back at the hotel late, having been to a wedding to find the bed hadn't even been made! There was no feedback form---perhaps because they fear what they would say.

The website for this hotel should not be believed.

The room we were given was not clean, dust and dirt everywhere. The bathroom was one of the worst I have ever seen. Stains and hair, mouldy shower curtain to mention a few. One hotel we will never return too.

Websites can be so misleading! I wish I had looked for reviews on tripadvisor before booking at this hotel. What appeared to be smart, clean rooms on their website turned out to be grubby and jaded in reality. The en-suite bathroom was filthy and I have never slept on such a cheap and nasty mattress - you could feel every spring! The whole hotel needs decorating and recarpeting and the staff need a good strong manager to check they are working rather than sat drinking coffee!! Very disappointing. Won't be returning.

The Golden Lion is the only decent sized hotel within the town, the Allerton Court is rather out of the centre and a bit "Travel Lodge". The Golden Lion is like the old coaching inns of the past, and I have to say the food and choice is equally traditional. The hotel is very well patronised, especially on market days. The stairway to the highest room is to say the least precarious. The common parts leave a lot to be desired, quite shabby in fact. The staff (not all but the majortiy) seem so demotivated, with lots of examples of how not to behave in a service industry. Maybe the owners aren't bothered and just depend on the fact there isn't much choice unless you go out of town. Some of the hygiene left a lot to be desired - it was a shame really because there literally a couple of stars on the staff, and the place could be so much better.

  • Liked — The location and the food was very good
  • Disliked — The shabbiness the very very miserable staff, one walked off as I was ordering!

Our room smelt bad. I assume that this was because it used to be a smoking room. But it smelt horrible really musty. We did open the window - but the noise from outside was too piercing to cope with (someone drilling metal I think? - there is a workshop of some sort below the hotel). The decor was dated. Carpet had stains on it. Shower was just pathetic - almost no water came out of it and it took an age to get it the right temperature! Our bed was propped up by books - or pieces of wood in the shape of books! Overall it wasn't a nice experience. The only positive thing I can say about the hotel is that the breakfast was delicious!

This hotel is situated on the High Street in Northallerton, and is what could be best described as a pub with rooms.
There is parking on the High Street directly outside the hotel, but this is restricted during the daytime, and more long term parking can be found to the rear of the hotel.
The greeting at reception was friendly enough and the rooms are up the stairs along a rabbit warren of corridors in keeping with the traditional guest house this aspires to be. The rooms are large, reasonably equipped with good sized bathroom, but only a small portable TV for entertainment.
The bar and restaurant looks very tired and in need of refurbishment. The breakfast was of a good standard with good service, the food in the evening can be best described as basic pub grub and I am sure better cuisine can be found outside on the High Street.
The shower in my bathroom was just a dribble at best, so I reported this to reception, who told me this was supposed to be fixed last week. Although this issue was not resolved during my stay I was offered to move rooms, which I declined, and as an alternative was offered as key to another room to use the shower, this I thought was great customer service.
Overall this is an adequate place to stay overnight, but I would go elsewhere for your evening meal than the downstairs bar.
