“Home from Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

We spent a thoroughly enjoyable week-end (an Alistair Sawday slow weekend) at Gallon House in December that incorporated a 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration. The overall experience was excellent accomodating our local family members as if they were their family. This is our second stay and was even better than the first it was "our home is your home"

I would recommend this friendly hotel to all. The location was great the view from the bedroom overlooked the river Nidd and knaresborough castle. The owners Rick and Sue were friendly yet professional. The room was superb and the breakfast delicious. A must for a return visit.

Six of us have just returned from the Gallon house! For a celebratory birthday! All three rooms were delightful well furnished, spotless and clean with all 'mod' cons and more. Small bathrooms with BIG bathrobes, Clairins toiletries and a whole host of goodies included in the price. A good nights sleep was had by all!
Rick and Sue the owners are a great couple who took a great deal of time ensuring our night was a splendid one. Rick cooked a fabulous dinner for us with canapes, starter, the best roast beef ever! Pudding and a fine cheese board topped it all off! Delicious! And at the touch of a bell Sue will appear with every whim catered for all with a calm, caring & friendly service! These two know how to do it! Its is apparent everywere with the lovely touches in every room! Books, objects, things of interest it leaves you wanting more!
Not forgetting the lovely public rooms, large lounge and dining room and the most wonderful terrace with views across the river and beyond the Gallon House is special! We will be back.

Room Tip: All rooms enjoy a differnet feel and view

A long overdue review here! We stayed at Gallon House in May of this year for our daughters first birthday (she won't remember it, but we certainly will!!) We stayed in the castle view room, which as many reviewers have pointed out has some great views, it is well furnished and homely as is every area of the house from the conservatory (with more great views) to the huge settees which you just sink into in the living room area. We chose to ate at the hotel for all 3 nights of our stay both because of the convenience with having a baby with us and the reviews of Ricks food. Just as all the other reviews tell you, we were not disappointed! We were a little wary of having to sit at a dining table with people who we didn't know as we had our daughter with us, but on the 2 nights where we were dining with other guests it was no problem at all and we had an evening of great food and conversation. The food on each night was varied, so so tasty and well presented, Rick was able to accomodate my daughters dietry requirements also (he also made her a little piped potato birthday cake with candle on her big day too!) I also came away with Rick's recipe for his mushroom tartlet which was so nice I had to know how to make it! The location is very good - within easy reach of both York and Harrogate, and there is a very good pub across the road from the train station!! Parking is a bit of a pain, but nothing which could detract from such a relaxing treat of a stay. We'll definately be back to Gallon House in the future and can recommend to all, that if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Knaresborough or the surrounding area, that Gallon House is a must (& make sure you book yourselves in for dinner too!)

We had found Gallon house, as many others, via the internet. We were not disappointed and enjoyed the pace and atmosphere of the hotel enormously. The food was fabulous and certainly made the weekend a gastronomic delight. As it was our silver wedding anniversary we had chosen to eat elsewhere, apart from the evening we arrived, as we wanted to have a more intimate dining experience than Gallon was able to offer, this is not a criticism. We would recommmend that you make time during your stay to just sit and enjoy the view from Gallon over the Nidd it really is stunning and I for one could have easily spent an entire day watching the trains, boats and wildlife in the gardens and on the river below. A disappointment was not catching a flash of blue of the resident kingfisher but the variety of many other birds made up for this. There is lots to enjoy in Knaresborough and when the sun came out it was quite magical. There is an interesting set of trompe d'oeil paintings around the town and it is quite good fun trying to track them all down. Further afield there is breathtaking scenery in abundance and a trip to Harrogate on the train with tea at Betty's is a great way to spend a day. Rick and Sue make a trip to Yorkshire every bit worth the journey and as i said in their personal guest book the hotel should be availble on the NHS. Rick needs to find a way of bottling the experience and selling it as it would certainly warrant a Premier Cru label.

Room Tip: As long as you do not have mobility difficulties go for the castle view room which has stunning view...

We booked Gallon House after the great reviews on TripAdvisor, and we weren't disappointed. A particular draw was the promise of Rick's cooking and it was excellent - easily the best meal out we've had in ages! The evening meal was just superb and we were lucky enough to be able to eat alone as we both thought sharing a dining table with the other guests could go either way. We were treated to smoked mackerel and smoked salmon pate with Balsamic croutons followed by herb-stuffed chicken breast with Provencal sauce, potato rosti, mange toutes and tarragon carrots (or Harrogate carrots, as I heard it). All perfectly cooked and presented. Pudding was brandy-snap basket with fresh strawberries and ice-cream. Delicious!

Service was always polite, friendly, interested but unobtrusive.

Breakfast the next morning was equally fantastic. Hard to improve on a full cooked breakfast, but home-made Black Pudding was a first and it was excellent.

All in all, we couldn't fault Gallon House and we're already working out an excuse to return soon.

My mother and I stayed at Gallon House for a Friday and Saturday night as we were visiting Harrogate. We were looking for somewhere luxurious and we found it. The place is beautifully decorated inside and out, with a lovely big terrace overlooking the river and bridge where you can sit with a gin and tonic or coffee - very relaxing! The hosts, Rick and Sue, are clearly pros and were so welcoming and accommodating. Upon arrival we weren't sure where to park so we went inside and Rick gave various parking options but also said that if it was difficult finding a spot (it wasn't!) he would move his car for ours for the weekend. As it happened parking is very convenient once you know where to go!

They took our bags up to our room for us and then we came downstairs for a gin and tonic on the terrace. We dined there on the first night - the flavours in the food were amazing. Good, reasonably priced wine list too. We dined with one other couple who were staying there who were very pleasant and we all enjoyed a digestif on the terrace afterwards.

We stayed in the twin - the room was lovely, with luxurious bedding (from Oka!) and Clarins toiletries. We had a lovely bay window overlooking the river. Every detail had been thought of, including a basket of useful items (sewing kit, pair of tights, shoe polish, anything you might suddenly need but wouldnt bring!) The compliments tray was excellent with teas, coffee and hot chocolate, elderflower cordial and Black Sheep ale (and Harrogate mineral water!).

The situation of Gallon House overlooking the bridge and river makes it very peaceful. Trains go past ever half hour but NOT at unsociable hours, (none after 10 or before 7) and the sound doesnt carry anyway. A good's night sleep was had!

Breakfast - amazing. You are presented with a menu of things to choose from. I had kippers on the first day and my mum had poached haddock and eggs on a muffin - beautifully done. I would however recommend the full English as the black pudding was the best Ive ever tasted - Rick makes it himself. All the plates, cups etc are Emma Bridgewater - a nice touch.

Another great point is that the train station is practically outside the front door, so its perfect for visiting Harrogate, Leeds and York. £2.80 return each to Harrogate, brilliant if you don't want to drive and much cheaper than a taxi (£14 each way!!!)

The cost if staying we thought was good value for the comfort, service and ambience. I wouldn't now want to stay anywhere else in future when I visit Harrogate!
