“Great break following Wetherby Races”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

We staying here in December 2012 after going to Wetherby Races in the day.
We were able to park the car at lunch time, cheked in then went off to the races. Returned late afternoon and found out an irish band was playing in the pub that night.
We had an excellent time, room was cosy, lovely and warm (well needed after standing in the cold all afternoon). Evening entertainment brilliant. Breakfast was great and the hospitalily was fabulous, made you feel like you were with old friends!. Highly recommend staying here, I'm sure it won't be our last stay here. Went home feeling we made some great friends!

We stayed at the old royal oak between Christmas and new year and had a great time . This is our third visit as we have enjoyed it so much before. The rooms are warm and cosy , very high standard of cleanliness and have nice touches like a Christmas fruit bowl.
Mark and Jean ( the landlord and landlady ) were very friendly as were all the staff , and went out of the way to make stay special.
The breakfast was fantastic, my husband was raving about the bacon although sorry we couldn't eat it all . I would also recommend eating in the pub as the food is great and good value . Try the carafes of wine especially the rose.
An added bonus was the live band who were playing on the Thursday , lots of fun and obviously very popular . All in all a great value place to stay and a good location for exploring the Yorkshire dales and Harrogate . We will be back !

Stayed the weekend before last and was pleasantly surprised by the tasteful contemporary rooms which were immaculately well kept, can not find a single flaw with the impeccable service provided. Highly reccomended to anyone looking for a short getaway in a beautiful old time market town.

Just come back from an excellent weekend away(despite realising on arrival I had nothing to unpack as I had left it in Manchester). Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfasts were of a very high quality and delicious and rooms very warm and cosy despite a sprinkling of snow outside. We even managed to sleep right through a saturday night despite being next to the pub, so not noisy at all. We feel rested and had a great time, will definetly be back soon. Hopefully a bit wilder this time and with a full case, I blame the gin on saturday afternoon!!!. Although the beds and pillows were too comfy to leave.

Just had a two night break at the Old Royal Oak.Couldn't fault it in any way, great location, excellent breakfast, comfortable rooms, friendly staff and within walking distance of all attractions.Added to this is the benefit of the free off street parking.York, Harrogate and Ripon within a short drive.

On a recent holiday in Knaresborough we decided that we would like to eat outside of our Hotel and were confronted by an array of establishments all providing food and drink. Having looked at a number of establishments we decided to try The Royal Oak in the Market Place and were very pleased that we did. We received a warm but not over the top welcome from the staff and were encouraged to "try before we buy" the real ales on offer.Having selected our drinks we ordered our food and were delighted with the quality and quantity of meals. They advertise that their food is home cooked and that certainly was the case. The staff were very friendly and we got into a conversation about real ales in a relaxed and warm environment. We would have no hesitation in going to The Royal Oak again and next time we would probably stay in their well appointed accommodation

My wife and I visited this excellent pub/restaurant/B&B one week ago, and we were delighted!!! It is located directly on the market square in Knaresborough. Our accomodations were superb...we had direct control of heat in the room and in the bath, which is not all that common in country inns, and when we visited the dining room, we had a wide variety of choices of some of the best food we enjoyed during our two weeks in England, prepared to order, served HOT, and every course was delicious and attractively presented. We will visit this fine hostelry again, without fail, the next time we visit Northumbria.
