My wife and I, now aged approx 60, have been eating two evening meals annually at The Star for several years and have yet to be disappointed.
This year it was as good as ever. Highlights on the first evening were loin of lamb and poached quince and blue cheese salad; on the second evening, grouse and mushroom macaroni. Ingredients are generally locally sourced, eg. very local duck and venison, fish from Whitby, and Yorkshire cheeses. There is a good vegetarian selection. The dishes are imaginative. A bonus for me is the real ales, which are local and well kept.
Service is excellent and the pace of the meal good.
My one complaint, not an uncommon one, is why the need for piped music? And if it is necessary, something gentle or Christmassy would be better than the dreary and meaningless pop. On the plus side, the waitress did turn it down on request and we had, as usual, carol singers to entertain us for part of Saturday evening.
The restaurant is not cheap but we think good value for money for the quality provided.
The Michelin star is well earned and we will look to return again next year.
Of the two sections to The Star, we prefer the more intimate atmosphere of the old dining room, with its wood panelling and low ceilings but others may like the newer part better. All a matter of personal preference.
