“Excellent Food & Accomadation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

I stayed at the General Tarleton last week for two nights as I was attending the Home & Gift Fair in Harrogate. I was really impressed and would have no hesitation in staying there again or recomending it to freinds. The decor throughout is lovely, my room was clean & modern I even had Molton Brown Toiletries. The food was excellent as were the staff, I can't praise it highly enough it was a real treat to stay there.
The location is also very convienient for the Park & Ride at the Show grounds into Harrogate
for the Trade Fair.

My husband and I have eaten here a few times and it has always been spot on.
I recommended the hotel when my parents visited with a friend.
The hotel is in a quiet village and when we met up with them for dinner the restaurant was busy which is always a good sign.
We enjoyed a couple of drinks outside in the sun before dinner. All 5 of us agreed that the food was excellent and the service was excellent too.
The restaurant and bar have a lovely atmosphere.
I looked in mum and dads room while I was there.I was very impressed. It had recently been re furbished. Full size Molton Brown toiletries, bottles of water, tea and coffee.
Highly recommended and we will be back soon!

Having just read other reviews for June 13, I wonder if we stayed in the same hotel. Our room was, as requested, on the first floor as we had read other reviews about noise and soundproofing. It was small and was definitely NOT newly decorated. The check in process was functional, but not particularly friendly. The decor in the room was quite tired and the view, over the staff parking area wasn't particularly inspiring. The bathroom was badly lit and the shower screen leaked and left puddles of water on the floor each time we used it. There was very little space to put anything. Also, the water pressure was quite poor from the shower which is not what I expect in a 5 star establishment. However, we had read such fantastic reviews about the food - that was what we were there for. After a drink in the lounge, we were ushered to our table as soon as we had ordered. There was a definite feel of being rushed which wasn't what we particularly wanted. It could have been due to the fact that the lounge area is quite small and doesn't seat large numbers easily. But, we definitely felt as though we were being rushed through. In fact, having booked our table for 8pm, we were sitting down and eating our starters just before 8. The food was nice, although not the best we have ever had. The staff were helpful and unobtrusive. Unfortunately, I was quite ill overnight after my meal, which completely ruined the experience for us both. I was unable to eat any breakfast other than a small piece of toast and a cup of tea. The staff dealt with this reasonably well overall and gave a discount on our bill which, whilst not generous, was fair. Overall, the experience was disappointing and most definitely not up to the standard of the many 5* establishments in which we have previously stayed.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room, not overlooking the staff parking area.

Our 3rd stay in 4 months and even surpassed the previous. Our room was immaculate with lovely, fresh decor and appeared new throughout. We shared a glass of wine in the very relaxing lounge before changing for dinner which I have to say was fabulous and gives many top restaurants a run for their money. Both the food and the service was very special. I could not pick a single fault even if I had to. In fact, it was so good we returned the next day after checking out for lunch!!
The General Tarleton really is a great find in North Yorkshire. You will not be disappointed.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

We've eaten here several times over the last 10 years, including hiring the private dining room for a family retirement party, and the food has always been excellent. This time we made a weekend of it while visiting Yorkshire for a family wedding. Our room was on the first floor and looked newly refurbished with beautiful décor in soft mauves, greys and silver. The rooms are not huge but the king size bed was very comfortable with high quality linen and pillows and the bathroom finished to a high spec with a powerful shower over the bath. The lights in the bathroom are motion-controlled - it took us a while to work out why there was no switch! There are homemade biscuits to go with the cafetiere coffee and selection of teas, and fresh milk available in a fridge downstairs.
On the Friday evening we ate in the restaurant - just the one course as we'd had a substantial lunch elsewhere. We were recommended one of the daily specials: slow-cooked beef cheek with cannellini beans and curly kale, and also a bottle of red wine to accompany it. Both were absolutely delicious - in fact just thinking about it makes me feel like our Labrador in front of her dinner bowl.
Breakfasts are equally delicious with amazing kippers and smoked salmon on the menu alongside the inevitable (but mouth-watering) Yorkshire Platter of sausage, bacon, egg, black pudding etc.
There's no bar area here anymore as its truly a restaurant rather than a pub, however there's a comfortable lounge with squashy sofas where you can sup a gin and tonic before dinner, or relax with a coffee and a brandy afterwards. The service is friendly and down to earth as befits a small Yorkshire village with no other claim to fame than its duck pond and its useful proximity to the A1. So if you're en route to the North (or South!), or wanting to explore York, Harrogate and Knaresborough give it a try. It's not cheap but it really does feel worth the money.

This was the third time we had eaten in the restaurant, and yet again were well looked after and presented with superb quality food both in looks and taste.
A warm and classy interior décor awaits you upon entry...
Well worth a ride out from York on a summers evening..
Do yourself a favour.. and visit soon!.

We got married here in October 2012, and everything about our stay was perfect. We chose the setting because of the food quality and the decor in the lounge and private dining area. The staff we brilliant, the food was out of this world and we cannot wait to go back. Yes the rooms could do with a refresh but they certainly dont have poor lighting and the bathrooms aren't cramped. We took over the whole hotel and not one guest had an issue with their rooms. Enzo/Katie and their team are brilliant.
We also went here for Valentines Day 2012 and the offer was brilliant and the food outstanding!
