We had never been to Cleethorpes or Grimsby. Circumstances demanded that we go there to look at a car for our son. A friend said it was a real dump, but having to travel 120 miles we took our overnight bags just in case. Driving along the front we noticed the Kingsway Hotel. It looked a nice situation overlooking the sea. They had a double room with bay window overlooking the beach, which we decided to take. First impressions were of a somewhat old-fashioned hotel with lots of brown panelling. but this was misleading. No threadbare carpets here, pleasant lounges and fascinating public rooms. A lovely dining room with superb sea views. The room was most acceptable, including a separate bath and shower cubicle. Only criticism was no soap dish in the shower, and a loose door. The bed was comfortable and there were two good chairs to use for admiring the view, but we could have done with a coffee table. I think the table had been taken to mount the modern flat screen television!. Surprisingly the carpet was fixed with carpet tacks rather than gripper rods, but overall very the room was bright and acceptable and reasonable value.
The restaurant was not cheap, but the food quality, choice and presentation was excellent. In particular the vegetables served with dinner deserve mention, they were imaginative and beautifully cooked. Breakfast was fine. The restaurant staff were absolutely fantastic, smoothly efficient and very friendly. Reception staff were similarly friendly and efficient. The hotel has been owned by the same family for over 60 years. The owners actively run the hotel. Their caring attitude shows through in the service. A bonus is a superb garage and parking provision. Overall a very pleasant stay, almost five blobs.
What about the "dump". Well driving into Grimsby and passing the sadly derelict docks area was not inspiring. However enter the promenade and it was different world. The promenade road had lots of immaculate flower beds, lots of seating and pedestrian facilities. We saw no graffiti. The beautiful sandy beach was kept very clean. We took the splendid miniature train along the coast and were surprised at the selection of facilities available, all apparently well tended. We noticed that these facilities such as the railway were not well publicised. In summary the Cleethorpes end of the Grimsby/Cleethorpes conurbation was a really quite attractive pleasant surprise. Stay at the Kingsway and try it.
