“Great atmospheric central hotel, really welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Uppingham is the perfect idyllic location for exploring rutland and the garden hotel reflects the character of the area perfectly. Its not trendy or pretentious which may mean mixed reviews but offers genuinely warm welcome and comfortable traditional accommodation if modern is important to you stay in a travel lodge and enjoy the formica! I enjoyed our stay because of the really friendly staff and informality of the place. Its like staying in a listed home with old friends in this beautiful market town. For me service, atmosphere and welcome are missing from most hotels but the garden in the heart of town had all these in spades with rich country club style lounges/bar, great breakfast and we had a choice simple to fancier rooms depending on what you spend!

travelled on business during late August and although the town is very pretty the hotel is a little jaded and as another reviewer has mentioned has the feel of a guest house rather than a hotel with little in the way of services available to residents. The price of accommodation does not really accurately reflect these circumstances. I understand from local residents that the hotel has been on the market for some time and it may be that the current proprietors lack the desire or motivation to greatly enhance what could otherwise be a very good asset in terms of its location, structure and environment

lovely little hotel but the beds are too short and too narrow.... The breakfast is really nicely thought out and very tasty but there could be more of the cooked stuff. The staff are always incredibly friendly and offer a warm welcome.

My husband and I and our 5 month old baby stayed the night at this hotel while attending a wedding at the nearby Keythorpe Manor. While the garden is very pretty and the breakfast was delicious - we feel that this hotel does not provide value for money. The room charge was £85.95 for a double and you couldn't even fit a travel cot (a small baby bjorn one!) in the room we had (room 8). We only managed it by removing a chair and placing it on top of the cupboard and fitting the cot snugly between the bed and the wall which blocked the route to the bathroom. We also had family come to visit us briefly and we ordered three cups of teas in the lounge/bar downstairs - the charge for a cup of tea (note - no biscuits or cake) was £3.95 per cup of tea!!! We only found out the cost charged when we checked out and when I stated it was very overpriced, I was informed that this was the going rate locally. I don't know if this is the case (Uppingham is a very beautiful quaint town) - but I checked around with other wedding guests who had booked into accommodation nearby and they had larger and more modern rooms/bathrooms at much cheaper rates!!

A delightful little town in the middle of glorious countryside, Uppingham is well worth a visit in its own right. The landscape changes to the more yellow ironstone and Uppingham's size makes it a good venue for a short break. Three generations of us stayed in the Garden Hotel overnight (in five rooms), were able to park bicycles through the garden, and grateful for lots of hot water. The traditional decor was attractive and we appreciated being able to take over one of the pretty sitting rooms for our group. It was easy to walk to a pub or local restaurant and the hotel staff were very friendly & helpful. Plus a great breakfast, with a 'full English' & endless toast.

Room Tip: A view over the garden is nice. If you have mobility difficulties, you should discuss this when boo...

£150 for two nights may not seem like a lot for some people, but to me I want a return for my money. The room though big enough had a single and double bed, I had to sleep on the single because the double's springs were not up to two people sharing.
The shower and bath were just that, nothing fancy and the drink making equipment was below par as you had to use bath water to fill the kettle, for goodness sake you people supply bottled water.
The two good things about the hotel was the food and the door out.

Room Tip: The place is full of supply teachers who get up really early - no room is better than any other at s...

The decor is dated and so is the matress. I spoke to the management before we left. Hopefully they will replace the matress. The full English breakfast was good although they only serve breakfast untill 9.30am on a Sunday.

Room Tip: Choose the room from the website and check the matress for comfort
