5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Staying locally en route nborthwards, we chanced upon The Star Inn for dinner. It was a Wednesday evening, and fairy busy ... but the staff were delightful and very attentive. We were offered very good filtered and bottled tap water and bread whilst waiting for our starters - the prawn cocktail, which was tasty and well presented. We waited, oh, about 15 minutes for our mains and boy was the short wait ever worth it. My travelling companion rated the fish and chips as the best ever, and my liver was delicious (and cooked just as I'd ask - medium to well, which some chefs take exception to and serve pink nonetheless). Emphasis is very much on pleasing the customer. Thank you!

Myself and my husband visited the Star Inn on Friday 4th January 2013. The bar area is not separated from the restaurant. There are two or three steps up to the restaurant area. No barrier exists for diners in the area where we were seated between the bar and restaurant. If you are in a couple, and the restaurant is busy, there is no other area for you to be seated as all of the other tables are for 3, 4 or more. We did, in fact ask if there was another table available elsewhere when we were shown in, but the answer was negative and no other option was offered! The bar was very busy, mainly made up of a crowd of about 20 young men, but I would not call the atmosphere vibrant. My husband and I in fact like a vibrant atmosphere, it adds to the enjoyment of the night. The atmosphere was much, much more than that and it is obvious from the choice of vocabulary from the star that that person was not present that evening. I would have called the atmosphere loud, immature, drunken, boorish and loutish. This kind of behaviour you may expect to see in a rugby club when the wives and children have gone home, certainly not in a village inn that rates itself as 4 star! The fact that the staff kept serving these individuals with shots and let them carry on with their moronic drinking games when it was obvious that diners were becoming very uncomfortable, leaves much to be desired. Maybe there should have been a quiet word with the crowd, then a warning. When paying between £60 - £80 for a meal for 2 I do not expect to have to put up with this kind of behaviour. We do, as my husband says have a very long association with The Star. It has a very dear place in my heart as it was where we had our first date. My affection for it has now been tainted. I do not know if I shall return in the future only time will tell.

I am aware that you have a long association with the Star Inn and therefore quite familiar with our Restaurant and Bar, as you had not actually pre booked to Dine with us on this evening no particular table was requested in advance and you were actually seated in one of our ‘four tables’ for 2 people near to the Bar.

You have confirmed that the Food and Drink served were very good, your review actually relates to others customers using the quite separate Bar area on this busy Friday night who disturbed your meal.

I do need to point out that this review is factually incorrect in a number of ways and portrays our 4 Star Inn as a bawdy Rugby Club, this is simply not the case as it is more accurately described as an ‘Old World Inn with a Modern Twist’ we do serve a wide cross section of people and the atmosphere can be what we call ‘Vibrant’ in particular on busy Friday night, but that is the character of the Star Inn.

Clearly we cannot please everyone, you have subsequently written to the owner about your experience who has responded to you personally and refunded the cost of your meal if it was disturbed as you say.

Stayed here on Christmas Eve on the way to friends for Christmas Day. They couldn't have been more charming and helpful, despite being very busy with Christmas Eve revellers and lunch preparations for the following day. Our room on the first floor at the rear of the Inn was quiet, despite a packed bar. The welcome was warm, and when we came down to the bar about 9.00 looking for a snack after a very large lunch eaten elsewhere earlier in the day, we were invited to help ourselves from the free buffet, laid on for Christmas Eve drinkers. There was live music and a very jolly atmosphere. The room was very clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. We had an excellent continental breakfast. Very pretty location, overlooking the village green.

I live locally and visited with my Dad on a Tuesday evening, which turned out to be Fish and Chip Night!
Upon arrival at around 7pm the pub was busy; the restaurant was fully booked so we sat in the bar area. This didn't bother us, it's not a very big place, and the atmosphere was good, especially for a Tuesday evening.
Service was very slow. I went to the bar to order drinks and tried to order the food to be told that somone would come to the table - even though we already knew what we wanted.
We had to wait a while for the menu, it seemed there was one person responsible for giving the menus out and taking orders - and I suspect he was doing the same in the restaurant area.
There was a bit of a wait on the food, but when it did come the portions were good and it was fresh and hot. No complaints about the food.

Service is certainly an area they should look to improve on here. I would hope that those sat in the restaurant were seen to more efficiently. We weren't overly bothered, because we had the special our bill was reasonable, and as I said, the atmosphere was pleasant.
We intend to go back and experience the restaurant area to judge that!

Thanks for the feedback
During the lead up to Christmas we can be quite busy, especially on Fish night, you are correct the Restaurant pre booked reservation will take priority, but normal food service in the bar normally only takes approx 30 minutes depending on the time order placed.

We look forward to seeing you again soon, please speak to Adam or Robert if you need a reservation in the Restaurant, but bear in mind we are often fully booked at this time of year.

Kind Regards
Nicole

The food is spectacular and the service is extremely friendly. They offer pub quizzes and themed nights such as fish and chips night etc.... The rooms offer large beds and gorgeous bedrooms with all amenities you could need. The price is a bit steep but it is worth it for such a great place!

Attending a friends wedding we arrived early Saturday afternoon, finally finding a parking space on the street as there is no car park. There is also no receptionist or reception area. The bar man was busy but soon tended to us and showed us to our room and explained that if we were to return late the front door might be locked and offered us a front door key. He was very pleasent and although the restaurant was full that evening he would ensure that we could get a meal as and when we wanted if we so desired. The room was fantastic, beautifully refurbished and my OH fell in love with the bathroom. Returning down stairs we had to wait some time to be served as the older gentlemen was deep in conversation. After ordering two glasses of red wine, we had to wait why he fetched some. Dont know where he was fetching it from but he was gone ages and I had to go back to the bar to find out why was taking so long. The same thing happened when i ordered coffee. Told he would bring it over, but again after 15 mins I had to go and ask. He did admit, he had got "side tracked" as he had to answer the phone. The bar area was very well presented, tables were all clean and the decor very tasteful, although disappointing the real fires had been replaced by "coal effect" electric fires. Having seen someone arrive looking as though he had run to the pub, we were surprised to see him behind the bar. He was like a breath of fresh air and like a coiled spring. The bar seemed to come alive, he must of said hello to everyone within the first five mins of arriving. I even commented to my OH that i guess he was the boss. How wrong I was !! Next time i ordered he (Gary) was serving someone else but acknowledged us as he was on his own. in between pouring drinks he said he would be with us next and asked what we wanted and said he would bring them over. True to his word, he came over promptly with drinks on a tray. It was great to see someone who obviously loved his job. If he wasnt serving he was chatting to customers. When i asked him what time the front door closed he was unsure and indicated it depended how busy they were. When we returned at night it was gone midnight, but there was a few people still in and we were told the bar had closed but we were more than welcome to have a few drinks. The young man that greeted us when we first arrived was very talktive and was in deep conversation with another couple that had attended the same wedding. Gary, who we found out only works part time, chatted to us and even remembered where we had been. It was a great way to end a lovely evening. The bed was lovely and comfortable, and the hot water was HOT !! Just think the bar staff could refrain in emptying the bottles at 1am !! The breakfast was ok but was disaapointed to learn that I had to pay extra for a english breakfast which i thought was wrong taking into consideration that the rooms, although very nice are not cheap, and maybe this could be made clear when booking as he adds another £15 to the bill.

Thank you for taking the time to review your time with us at The Star. We always want to hear about our customer experiences and what they enjoyed and where improvement can be made if any.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed the rooms, restaurant and bar.
Regarding the comments on the reception area, as we are not a hotel but a 4 star Inn we do not have a reception area. Also due to the age and space of the building this is not possible.
On street parking is usually very easy to find and a space is never more that a minute walk. Unfortunately due to our central village location we do not have a car park. We do offer a Continental breakfast with every nights stay and there is an additional charge for a cooked breakfast. All of the details of what is included with the stay and details of facilities are within the description on all booking sites we advertise ourselves with. We also inform all customers if booking direct with us. I will however speak with all staff to ensure this does not get missed when booking. I will also be updating our website to now include more clear details of our breakfast menu and additional charges and also more detailed description of parking availability.
I have taken your comments and compliments regarding the service and will be reviewing this with all staff.
We feel we offer great value for money with the quality of establishment and the picturesque location and ensure our prices are well matched to other hotels/Inn's in the surrounding area.
Thanks again for your detailed review and we hope to see you again if you are ever in the area
Regards,
Nicole Richardson

My suggestion is to visit this place, sample the food and the service it's one of the best pubs with accommodation in the area, previous reviewer is talking nonsense, guess they just wanted a cut price room, if you live within 30 miles of here you will find it to be a smart, contemporary country pub with a superb, if limited a la carte menu where you will eat and drink well for less than £100 for a couple in the evening, we even nipped in the other lunchtime for a sandwich and it was excellent. The manager can be a bit hit and miss hospitality wise but staff excellent. There are not many pubs in the north leicester area that are up to much but this one, refurbed last year does it well, as for parking.... it's got 2 or three spaces round the back but it's in a quiet village... opposite the village green, with plenty of parking on the street???
