We stayed because a friend's 40th was being held there.
First impressions were very good - the main building has been refurbished to a high standard, and the rooms in what I assume used to be the stable block have a fresh, well-appointed feel.
Check-in was easy and efficient, leaving us to freshen up before the big event. The bathrooms look very recent. Loads of hot water, but three little gripes - no bath, a general lack of storage for washbag contents, toiletries and cosmetics, and no tray in the shower to place the soap, shower gel or shampoo.
The meal was wonderful, with all forty or so of the party well looked after and a fine range of starters, mains and desserts.
Sleep quality could have been better, with a little intrusive noise from the rooms next door courtesy of what seemed flimsy walls, and a comically soft bed which resembled a see-saw everytime one of us got up.
Breakfast was impressive, with a fine range of continental options. All the components of a full English cooked breakfast were on offer, but these were a little disappointing in practice; my partner's black pudding was too dry and flavourless, and my sausages were overcooked and chipolatas as opposed to real bangers.
In summary a very pleasant place to spend a night and celebrate a friend's big birthday. With a little more attention to detail it could be truly excellent.
