First visit and wont be the last. Cant believe never heard of the OG though recently "won" a taste card with the Walkers crisps promo and myself and him at home were looking for a new place to try, We found the OG. Did a bit of trip advising and was very impressed due to the high volume of positive feedback. Also LOVED Michaels responses to comments especially the "miserable" one - am not disputing anyones opinion or experience though it seems a full story was illustrated by this person based on their actual experience. Well done Michael for caring for your team and business profile and we can honestly say we experienced no one miserable on our first visit just a team of people investing and providing excellent service with no bad attitude whatsoever.
We were met by Michael at the door (did not know at this point he was the manager) Had booked table for 6.30 pm 5 minutes early though was asked if we wanted a drink at the bar or to go straight to table. We opted for the latter. We were guided to our table and asked if we wanted to order drinks and were presented with the wine list. I was also advised how the taste card worked as only available from a la carte. Good management of a customers expectations.
The restaurant was very busy, a large group of 20 ish were to our right hand side, a group of approx. ten behind us and other tables full, There was a happy buzz and as Micky Flannagan would say a "good ambience" (though I didn't ask for ketchup). Décor was warm and inviting. Not a cool contemporary or traditional though it isn't trying to be anything, it is just a nice area to eat food in and enjoy company. I really enjoyed the different forms of lighting, the few pictures/ornaments dotted about as it just created a nice feel without being tacky or wannabe. Nice clean table and no grubby menus (and when large party of 20 left the tables were promptyly stripped down, separated and all gleaming in no time).
Pint of John Smith just under £3 and Peroni just under £4 so competitively priced and him at home being a fan of smooth bitter glad to have good old faithful on tap. I looked at the wine list and have seen some down marking on house wine though seriously at 11.95 a bottle of house you rarely get a sophisticated house wine anywhere and prices are usually at least £13 - £14) so think some people expect too much for the house wine as well it normally does what it says on the can!
Started arrived in good time. Him at home had the Fegatini and I ordered ribs and we shared a Mexicana. All we can say is big on taste and a generous portion. The rib sauce was delicious and soo tasty and all home made. In my experience most ribs at other eateries seem to be covered in sauce from an industrial sized tub. Him at home loved his fegatini and enjoyed the tomatoes in the sauce as has never had them in other liver dishes. The only thing that could have enhanced the starters, which I will ask for next time, is a small side of salad. A few leaves, cucumber and onion. I just enjoy a bit of greenery with the starters though am sure this would be accommodated the next time we visit.
Plates cleaned up they were soon collected and probably a 5 minute wait then mains. Him at home had ordered steak with mushroom and port jus and myself the chicken Toscana. The steak was a handsome lump of beef with a rich looking jus and mushrooms. The chicken breast was huge and a generous portion of rich tomatoey sauce with red onions garlic and basil. We shared a large bowl of vegetable with chips and 2 was put into one (think miserable person on previous comments maybe thought the larger bowl they probably got was meant for 1). Chips were tasty and home made, broccoli carrots and cauli. The veg was perfectly al dente except the chips. Nice to have home made chips too as the frozen variety just defy bland to me.
The chicken was tender and succulent and obviously sourced from a good butcher. What I would call a "Jordan (Katie Price)" sized fillet :) I am not big on sauce so did not eat it all as prefer a white wine lemon and garlic cause where possible with no cream though it was tasty and perfectly cooked and of high quality. Him at home devoured his steak loved the jus though found the mushrooms not as succulent as expected though we fed this back to Michael at the end of the meal when he asked how we enjoyed it and thanked us for our feedback and said that he would feed this back to the chef. The steak, as many others have commented, is some of the best he has ever tasted.
We loved it, we found the quality of food here better than some of the more expensive and commercially renowned restaurants we have visited. Wish you were a bit closer!
someone was celebrating at the meal and they put music on all the team got together and they calpped and sang and had a dance with the celebratee .
We will be spreading the word and look forward to returning. All of the team worked fabulously together and made us welcome. We don't go out to make friends though it is nice to be made to feel welcome and also to leave as nicely stuffed as we did. Just hope the waffles with toffee and banana sauce are still on the menu next time as I really wanted to have a go.
Thank you to Michael and all the team and "Asta la Vista baybees"
