“Dirty Room - Needs Makeover”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2009

This hotel changed its name between the time of my booking to arrival. It is now called The Miraj Hotel.
Clearly there is refurbishment taking place around the reception and dining area.
Check in was late evening and went smoothly. Friendly and efficient staff member.
Our room (48) was above the restaurant with a good view of the car park.
The bed linen and towels were white and spotless. We had a good nights sleep, even though there was a karaoke party beneath us.
The room itself was dirty, which was a real shame. My wife's white coat had a black scuff from walking against the wall. Carpet had ingrained dirt. Paintwork was dirty. Tiles in bathroom had dirt in the grouting.
Breakfast was advertised as 'full english' and available from 8am. We arrived early for breakfast and were still waiting to eat at 8.20am. Thankfully we were first in the queue, as a little later 50+ wedding party guests arrived for breakfast.
We would stay here again. It was a shame we were given one of the rooms that had not been refurbished. Hopefully next time the room will be better.

My son and his fiancee had already booked this hotel for their wedding and booked a number of rooms for guests, so it was with some trepidation after reading the reviews on here that I entered the hotel.

Seven of us entered the hotel at the same time and we were each checked in quickly and efficiently.

We had a meal in the bar restaurant the evening before the wedding for 18 guests and as there was a wedding on we pre ordered our meals and they were served on time with no mistakes, thr sevice at the bar the night before and on the wedding night was quick and efficent.

On the day of the wedding Debby, the manager and her staff were excellent making sure that everything ran smoothly, and the one problem we had with the DVD that we brought with the music on was sorted with none of the guests or the bride realising that there was a problem.

Yes some off the areas do need refurbishment , and the fan in our bath room needed cleaning, but I think this hotel was good value for money.

If you like must, dust, wall paper falling from the walls and general filth, then book the Quality Hotel in Chorley, it promises to have heaps of this!!!
Yuk, I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.

We came up from London for a family reunion but not at the hotel, thank goodness!! Front door very difficult to open. At reception we were greeted with a smile and then had to wait nearly 5 mins before we could be "signed in" as a phone conversation was going on. Given quite long directions to find the room but the place like a rabbit warren - eventually found room 6,- through long bar area, through doors, around corners, another door and up stairs.
Room large with double and single bed and smelt musty. Opened the window to air and realised the smokers congregated in the corner under our window. Carpet had an iron burn(melted) and apart from a small stool, we had to always sit on the beds. Small TV and tea/coffee making equipment(kettle could have done with a good clean on the outside). Room clean and sheets etc very clean but pillows very thin. No net curtains so anyone outside could see into the room although the window was small and quite high. But the bathroom was the disaster area. The whole of the window frame, the roller blind and tiles had black mould all over - did wonder if the mould on the blind was a pattern but realised it wasn't when the shower curtain was similarly "stained". The bath panel had been taped over where it had split and seemed held in place with 2 screws - it also suffered from lack of cleaning. Tile grouting all around the the bath was stained with black mould with red mould around the edge of the bath The very basic shower head and metal hose was also filthy. Toilet seat had paint splashes and was not fixed well. BUT we were supplied with good, big white bath towels and one hand towel - well, we assumed this was a hand towel and not the bathmat as it hanging by the hand basin. If this was the case, no bathmat was supplied. I told the receptionist the next morning of our concerns about the mould and dirt - got the feeling no-one had said anything about it before. I was told that the management and maintainence were aware of "problems" with one or two of the bathrooms and that it would all be sorted out before we returned in the evening. Well, "new" shower curtain(but who chose them in the first place - the faintly beige pattern looked dirty) and the red mould around the bath edge had gone but all the rest was still there. Needed to pull the blind down when showering - ugh! - and the shower hose still filthy.
Went down for dinner on the first evening and found some people watching a football match in the bar area on the large TV and a huge screen by the bar. Dining area was off to one side of the bar/reception area. Waited for menus and realised that the young male receptionist was also the waiter as well as a barman helping 2 other young people serve the drinks. Assured all food freshly cooked and not "dinged" so ordered steak and ale pie and chicken salad. During this time 2 relatives phoned to say they couldn't find the hotel and despite alot of directions, still couldn't find the hotel - not surprising as none of the hotel signs had working lights. Food was OK but a little disappointing for "freshly cooked" considering the price charged.
Discovered the creaking floor boards upstairs and the very thin walls made for a noisy night especially on the second night when the couple next door kept a conversation going until 1.30am when "quiet" snoring took over.
We had breakfast on both mornings and again it was OK but the price charged was alot for what we had. The scrambled eggs were cooked to order but the "Full English" was dry. The lady serving was very efficient and pleasant, keeping us supplied with toast and pots of tea. But the tables and surrounding could do with a good clean - dusty and sticky surfaces.
Would we return? NO!
Would we recommend this hotel to anyone else? Not likely.
But one thing I have learned with this experience - READ REVIEWS before booking - and then decide!
And I really can't describe the "style" of this hotel except as tired and in desparate need of a makeover and some serious TLC, some clear directions around the hotel.
Its position in the country side should make it an ideal retreat and a good base for exploring the surroundings but nothing is made of its wonderful history and locality, the surrounding villages, unless the hotel web pages are used to get the information - why isn't this put into the so-called information folder in the bedrooms? Nearly left my copy but thought no, this is not my job!

OK, it's not a palace but it is a good honest place to stay.

To some extent comparing it with some of the other more expensive places in the area is a bit like comparing apples with oranges. They will not compete on facilities, but what they do i.e offer an amazing room rate, alongside friendly staff and good food they do well.

The management were always around and are clearly working hard to make a success of the place. My suggestion to the moaners is to look for the positives!
