Attended our friends wedding here over the weekend and stayed over the night.
My expectations weren't high as we had attended another friends wedding here a few years ago and the whole place looked/smelt old damp and dated, the wedding breakfast was the worst we'd ever had and the staff were so rude. I believe that the hotel has since then been taken over so was interested to see how it had maybe changed.
Well in truth it hadn't changed at all. The furniture was the same and the old carpet and that signature damp smell was still there. We checked into our room which upon making our reservation were told there were only twin rooms left, but upon entering the room we actually found it was a double. The room had yet an even stronger damp, mold smell with a big damp bubble on the wall. The bathroom floor was soaking wet upon entering upon which I immediately slipped on. The window in the bathroom did not open and the damp around the rotten window frame was appalling. The roller blind that was at the bathroom window was also absolutely covered in mold/damp which I couldn't believe was actually up at any window it was so bad. There were no handles on half of the drawers/cupboards in the room and the carpet was absolutely filthy and stained. As it was our good friends wedding the typical English attitude to not complaining prevailed and we didn't say anything for not wanting to spoil their day and knowing the hotel was booked up with other family/friends staying over.
The day continued and was lovely. The food was buffet style and in truthfulness was much much better than our previous visit, it was enjoyable. I did over hear at one point a gentleman member of staff "telling off" should I say, some younger members of staff and quite frankly I was rather shocked at his tone and the way he spoke to his staff. Other than that it was a lovely day and the food was good.
When we woke the following morning we went down for breakfast at around 9:15am (which was supposed to be served until 10am). We were handed a plate and out of the 6 items served for the cooked breakfast (sausage, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, scrambled egg and beans) 3 were empty (sausage, mushrooms and beans) and we were advised there was no more available. The bits left we were given were cold and rather awful (I wish we hadn't have paid for B&B when we checked in and had have gone elsewhere for breakfast! Heaven forbid those who came after us.
All in all the wedding of our friends was beautiful, but the hotel needs a TOTAL makeover and refurbishment. If this was done and they concentrated on the food standards a little more it could be a really nice place...until then I most definitely would not return.
