“Expensive and lacking room facilities”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

We spent a night at this hotel. The room was rather bare apart from a bed and a small cupboard - there was no chair. There was no kettle and the television did not work - all this for £85 per night - which was real rip off.

The only thing positive to say about the hotel was ther breakfast was ok but nothing special. I think this hotel should l;ower tnheir prices in line with what they offer.

Booked this on Wednesday for Saturday night, not much choice of hotel rooms or B&Bs available in Whitstable at short notice. This was the only room left in the hotel and cost £135. We arrived at about 3.30, the carpark was full, tiny about 5 usable spaces with one car up on bricks, we parked down the road at at the overspill car park which is not ideal. Checked in, our room was at the top of the hotel , no help offered with bags and although it had a double bed it was so small there was not enough room for a wardrobe. On the positive side it was clean and had a lovely view. The bar food was good, the breakfast is fine if you like a fry up, otherwise you'll be struggling. Rooms are overpriced, but obviously there's not much competition!

the first thing you notice when you walk into the 'unmanned' small reception is the smell of the toilets, right by the door, which are there for all the people in the bar and restaurant. had to wait 10 minutes for someone to check us in. room was clean and tidy, but very small. This was the intermediate priced room as it had a side sea view but not worth the £110 per night. so small it did not have a wardrobe, just a hook on the wall to hang clothes.
the positive is the location, great for access to the restaurants and bars or town centre, or strolling along the beach. breakfast was huge.

We wanted to have dinner in Whitstable without having to drive home. The Continental was ideal, close to the harbour , very clean and looked like it was recently refurbished. Rooms quite simple but more than adequate , friendly staff and very good breakfast.

Room Tip: We had a room on the top floor , it had a good sea view and was very quite.

We stayed at the Continental so that we could go to a friend's 50th birthday party without having to worry about having a few drinks and getting home. Reception staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is great - help yourself buffet and nice quality food. The dinner menu looks good though we did not eat at the hotel. Bar gets very busy at lunchtime but fine in the evening. The room we had was £85, and small. No tea & coffee facilities, but comfortable bed and nice linen. Had a partial see view which was unexpected. You pay £135 for a sea view room with balcony. All sounds a bit pricy for a small hotel but the view of the sunset is absolutely wonderful, and the location could not really be much better. Whitstable's expensive so you are paying the going rate really so don't be too disappointed. It's not the Hilton, but imagine what that would cost in this location. We enjoyed a drink in the bar and watched the sun go down. Fabulous! Woke up slightly earlier than would have liked on a bank holiday by the rubbish bins being moved at 6.40am, but hey ho!

Room Tip: Room 14 is a cheaper room but you do get a partial sea view.

We've stayed here twice, once as a family and once as a couple and each time had the most incredibly relaxing time. There are things about the hotel that you could criticize such as the tired-in-places decor and the occasional slightly lacksadasical reception, but the pros definately outweigh the cons. There is something about the easy-going atmosphere in the bar area that makes it a really pleasant place to sit around and just wind down and the rooms while neither huge nor overly luxurious are very clean and practical. The help-yourself breakfast (complete with wonderful toast-making machine) is served in the spacious restaurant complemented by a good sea view. Only an hour's drive from London and yet you really feel you are away from it all.

The Continental is a boutique type hotel. Small, personal and a high standard. We stay at least 1 day a month throughout the year. Room 4 is great for families! Try the mussels! Rooms are always clean and the breakfast is great!

Room Tip: Room 4 for family, room 2 has sea views at a cheaper rate.
