“At least the sunset was perfect! The Hotel disappoints, stay in the Huts.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2011

Have stayed in both the Hotel and one of the Fishermans' huts with a sea view on separate occasions. My main points from both stays are as follows:

Pro's:
- Location. A great base to explore Whitstable with beautiful views over the Thames Estuary.
- Very impressed with the beers from the Whitstable Oyster Company-owned microbrewery.
- Took advantage of the (now expired) Winter Weekend deal which offered good value.
- The fridges in the huts are generously stocked

Cons:
- Hotel room was freezing cold when we arrived.
- With the exception of one young waitress the service was generally cold and pretentious.
- Caught food poisoning during one stay (dodgy oyster perhaps), but to be fair this may not have been the Hotel's fault.

Room Tip: Book months in advance to guarantee a good room/hut

For the money you pay, you do not expect a revoltingly smelly reception area, worn out and sparse decor, disco noise until 4am and awful breakfast. Just dreadful.

We went to this hotel as it seemed to be the best available in Whitstable. If that is the case, I dread to think what the others are like. Reception was cool and disinterested, both on arrival and departure, with staff never once looking up when speaking. The room was so cramped that other than a cheap white melamine chest of drawers and bedside tables, nothing else would have fitted in. There wasn't even a chair. The bathroom, carved out of the bedroom, was a good size and modern. The two towels were hand, rather than bath size. The room had a balcony with a metal table and two chairs. It was grubby and neglected. Breakfast was self-service, pre-cooked and under heat lights, so dried up and poor quality. The coffee was stewed and luke warm, brought round in a Cona type jug. The breakfast is served in the bar area and the whole area needs re-vamping. There is what is potentially a beautiful tiled floor in the bar, but over the middle is a thin cheap rug. If the floor was deep cleaned and sealed, it could look stunning and they could put the rug in the skip. The bar and breakfast room was overrun with unsupervised noisy children, as were the corridors upstairs. Parking is a problem, as there is only space for three or four cars in the car park. No, we would not stay here again, as at £125, it was very poor value. Find a local B & B who would probably be half the price and much more comfortable.

We stayed here every week from March to June and due to our regular bookings we had a good room rate and they were flexible with their cancellation and amendment policies.

The rooms were fairly large, bright yellow - a bit shabby, but quaint in that seaside way. Several times I had a nice big bathroom and a huge bed. All rooms come with a tv which is good. We were able to come and go at strange hours too to catch the tides in and out.

Most nights we just ate at the restaurant, the peak season menu which came in during May was noticeably better, but the food was enjoyable throughout our stay. The lamb rump was delicious!

There is a small guest car-park out the back of the hotel, but is often full. the car park along the front is fine, not too expensive, and is free between about 6pm and 8am.

The location was great, right on the beach with a lovely walk out front to the right which goes miles along the coast. It was also about 5 minutes walk into the town centre where there are some lovely boutique shops and galleries, and just a couple of minutes walk to the harbour where there are a couple of nice restaurants - its also nice to sit and watch the comings and goings of the boats!

The breakfast was nice - some days it was self service and others you ordered from the waiting staff.

Wi-fi was also provided in the rooms

Rooms are small but the bed is comfortable. Suprised they don't have tea/coffee set in the room.

Food in the resturant is very nice and I like the atomosphere in the evening. Good spot to enjoy the sunset.

Don't be put off by the outside appearance. From arriving all staff have been friendly and helpful. The breakfast is excellent. The food in the restaurant is outstanding. We ate there first night and it was excellent accomodating my food fads was worried eating there a 2nd time would not be as good but they surpassed themselves addapting the menu again to accomodate. We have eaten in 5* restaurants around the world and could not fault the quality of the ingredients and the chefs ability to cook it so well. Will recommend to everyone.....

We have stayed here many times and we love it.It is far enough away from town to be quiet but not to far to walk in along beach /harbour
Although the rooms are expensive for what they are not many other hotels in Whitstable only B&Bs
The breakfast is great with lovely thick bacon that you dont often get good ole english breakfast!!!
Rooms need updating now but are clean bathroom clean with shower gel etc you have tea and coffee in room
We will be back we visit twice a year just get a lovely feeling when we are there.
Down by the famous fish restaurant near beach in town {owned by same company as hotel} there are tables on beach for public use get yourself some fish and chips in town the one with the queue outside its that good a bottle of wine and watch the sunset fab!!
Also visit The Neptune Pub along the beach also great for sunset watching enjoy !!!
