With our twelve year old daughter spending Christmas with her big sister in Denmark we decided on a Christmas getaway for just the two of us - something we had never done in 14 years of marriage.
Driving from the Netherlands we decided that a hotel fairly close to the UK end of the Tunnel would be ideal. We searched the internet only to find that nearly all of the more appealing hotels would be closed for the Christmas period - and then we found The Bell. The website gave the impression that it was just what we were looking for, and it was!
As we discovered in daylight (we arrived in the dark) Sandwich is a delightful town, mostly 15th century, which makes the 19th century incarnation of The Bell a mere youngster.
We had opted for the Bell's 3 night Christmas package, plus one night. Initially we considered it somewhat expensive until we analysed just what we were getting for the money and comparing it with our usual hotel standards and realising that it really was great value, especially with the pound rapidly approaching parity with the euro!
A nice welcome at reception prior to wending our way up to our compact, but perfectly clean room and bathroom. The bed was huge and comfortable and all the usual amenities were at our disposal but, as another reviewer noted, no cookies! However, the basket of nuts and mandarines placed in the room the following day was appreciated.
Eating was a special treat. We like our food and we were not to be disappointed in the hotel's restaurant. We normally skip dessert, but not here! The breakfast buffet was perhaps a little spartan by some people's standards but it provided us with all that we required and thus we declined to take up the option of a cooked breakfast.
Afternoon tea was provided on Christmas Eve as part of the package, along with a glass of 'bubbly', a little touch that, once again, we appreciated.
As with all other hotels/restaurants if you make the effort to develop a relationship with the staff they will, normally, warm to you and provide you with that little bit of extra service. So it was at the Bell. They put themselves out to make our Christmas a special event and we always kept in mind that they would also have preferred to have been at home with their families.
We would recommend the Bell without hesitation, to the extent that we are already considering the possibility of returning next Christmas.
