The Dering Arms is quintessentially English (fabulous old building, welcoming bars, comfortable rooms and good grub), but be beware! When booking, you will be asked to give your debit / credit card details to secure your room and warned that you will be charged for the room if you do not give 24 hours notice of your non-arrival. What you are not warned about is, that following your visit, supposedly "stolen" items will be charged your card.
I was brought up not to steal and to accept that people are innocent until proven guilty. This is the English way. However, the Dering Arms thought it acceptable to charge my debit card £50 for four towels "missing" from our room. For the record, there was no obvious sign of any towels in our room. I used my own towel whilst my partner (unable to find anything but a hand towel in the nearby bathroom) used the floor mat - bless him.
We were not given any opportunity to defend ourselves before my card was charged and, even though I have been raving about the quality of accommodation and food, I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Pick one with towels!
