“not as expected - and much worse too”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2011

The name of the guest house includes the title 'Blues Grill'........menus are shown and websites suggest booking for dinner. The blues grill does not exist! What was the blues grill is now just the breakfast room and the rather exoticly named hotel is a very average and ordinary guest house. And no sign of the promised bar.

The room was fine, nicely decorated etc and clean (though the waste bin had not been emptied and contained the previous occupant's empty Fosters cans amongst other things).

The bedside lights and the bathroom light did not work, so when it came to investigating a dripping noise in the bathroom at 5am it was not easy! Opening the bathroom door I was met with wall of heat and the bathroom a half centimetre deep in hot water from where the hot tap was not properly connected to its pipe. The leak had flowed out into the bedroom and the carpet was soggy over a square metre area. All this I reported at breakfast, but it came as no surprise and I was told that this had happened before. That explained why even before the incident the bathroom door did not open properly and there was a dark stain on the bedroom carpet.

Breakfast by the way included DIY coffee - a jar of instant and an urn of hot water: could do better.

The lad who seemed to be receptionist, room cleaner and breakfast chef was friendly - but best advice is stay at the Smiths Court two doors down which on the surface looks ten times better.

Room Tip: Room 4, sea view, too hot, open the windows and the gulls will wake you early

I really can't believe the cheek of some people: The Blues Grill does exist and guests are asked clearly to book in advance. We also have a fully stocked bar and guests will be served at all reasonable hours. The bar is not manned 24 hrs a day as we are a family run business however ask at reception and we will be very happy to serve you. The name of our establishment is also very clear we are The Malvern Guest House and Blues Grill. That is because we are very proud to say we are a 3 star graded Guest House and certainly not a Hotel or claim to be! All the lights in our rooms work and if on the odd occasion a bulb does blow then if a guest informs us we will replace it straight away. We have installed throughout the establishment all energy bulbs as we are environmentally aware and as most people know energy bulbs do take a bit of time to glow bright. I would also like to mention the said leak! You over tightened the tap and caused the leak yourselves as you are very well aware and as you could not be bothered to get dressed to come and inform a member of staff the water just flooded into the room and through the ceiling into the guest lounge it also went through a second floor into the dining room. As a result of your can't be bothered attitude and decided to not report this problem until breakfast you have caused damage to our electrics you have ruined our brand new fire alarm system, ruined the air conditioning unit and caused several thousands of pounds worth of damage to carpets, decoration and furniture. We have had to close out room 4 as we have got industrial de- humidifiers in there drying out the damage before redecoration work can even begin! Oh and by the way we have passed your details on to the insurers! Oh and yes by the way we do put instant coffee out at breakfast as well as freshly brewed coffee as some guests prefer it! We offer a wide selection of cooked and continental options at breakfast as well as a selection of tea, herbal tea, fruit juices and instant or freshly brewed coffee! You mention David, (The lad) who is a fully qualified chef our son who also checked you in and also helps clean rooms well what a surprise that must of been for you considering we are a family run concern and all muck in and help do all relevant jobs! Im not really sure how to please people like yourselves however I only hope you never return and I only hope that no other poor sole has to deal with the damage that you have caused to our property and to top it off you have the cheek to write this on here! Happy Day's the joy's of a Guest House Owner.

Absolutely disgusting hotel and not exactly cheap. The sheets were filthy and smelly. furniture looked like they had collected it from the dump. Carpets were covered in hair and dust, walls dirty and stained. Woke up itching. The shower was either cold or scalding and filthy to match the filthy toilet.

We were quite impressed with the old town of Margate it made a nice change from Broadstairs and was quite quirky. We had the best evening meal for a long time in Bebeached on the pier lovely local produce and a nice selection of seafood and cooked very honestly.

I really don't understand why people like you write such lies. All our rooms have been newly modernised in Jan this year. All our furniture is solid pine and very contempory as is the decor. We have put brand new beds throughout and clean our rooms daily. If what you write was true why on earth were no complaints received during your stay and why did you even stay at all if what you describe were true? All our en-suites were also fitted with brand new shower cubicals in Jan too! With brand new flooring to match. We take all guest comments very seriously however I feel this one is a joke!

we have stayed at this guesthouse twice and have found it to be friendly and relaxing, the breakfast is fantastic with plenty of choice, the rooms are clean and comfortable, towels changed daily well worth every penny.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our property all to often people are quick to complain and not so quick to compliment good service!

This is not exactly the Ritz, it's a bit basic and old fashioned - but it doesn't really claim to be anything else. I don't normally stay in seaside B&Bs so I perhaps am used to more facilities.

However, the service we received was absolutely excellent. We were looked after by a very friendly and obliging young man who let us store our things in the lounge even though we had arrived at 9.30am and our room wasn't yet ready. He was a real star and the breakfast he cooked in the morning was delicious - far better than anything I've had in even five-star hotels!!

Were greeted by a very pleasant young man. Room was comfortable and warm, towels, tea making facilities, and some toiletries given. Spacious and quiet. A very good hearty breakfast cooked to perfection, toast, cereals, tea, coffee and fruit juice also.Served by a very friendly girl and would definately stay there again in the summer. Many thanks. Made to feel very welcome.

Booked a 1 night stay here. The rooms look nothing like the website or their advertising pamphlet, they are tatty and rundown. The bedsheets had skin in them from a previous guest I assume, gross!!. No way is this worth any star rating let alone a 3 star. I have reported this to the Engish Tourist Board who issue the stars and are supposed to inspect these B & Bs every year (yeah right, the rooms didn't get this run down in a year). The furniture is old and looked like it had come from a charity shop, not like the modern stuff in their photos! I have been told the complaint has been passed to the owners of the premises....still waiting for a response.

We were checked into the room by a young man and we didn't even stay to unpack! Unfortunately we paid him the £60 they have the audacity to charge but after seeing the state of the sheets we left. So they did well out of us! Stay away, its disgusting!!

what a let down , we booked for two nights and only stayed for one, the hotel had let a bunch of yobbo's book in and as a result we were all kept awake till 5 in the morning whilst they ran riot, when we told the man we were checking out a day early because of the noise he said the yobbo's are checking out that day so whats the problem and even if we checked out he would still charge us even though we were no longer staying there as he had our card details. the restaraunt and bar were closed due to a bereavement , when we asked where the nearest place was to eat we were told it was 2 streets away he neglected to tell us the hotel next door has a public resteraunt . this hotel is badly placed for the town centre as it is about a mile walk. take our advice do not book this place avoid it like the plague....
