Owner description: The Shell Grotto is one of the world’s most mysterious places: a series of underground rooms and passageways covered by 2000sqft of exquisite mosaic created with 4.6 million shells. Discovered in 1835, nobody knows who created it, when, or why. “The grotto is simultaneously haunting and homely. It could be a lost pagan shrine or have ‘A Present From Margate’ picked out in the shells - it wouldn’t matter. It’s still magical, mysterious and (once it’s in your head) impossible to forget.” Far From the Sodding Crowd: More Uncommonly British Days Out, Penguin Books, 2007

“Definitely worth a visit !”

The shell grotto in Margate has to be seen to be believed, it really is a magical place. Combined with a visit to the Turner Contemporary you will go home feeling both mystified & inspired !

“fascinating mystery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2014

A friend who knew I was into photography told me about the grotto. It wasn't a huge place, but fascinating, I loved it. Its £3.50 per adult, but a family ticket is only £8, so very cheap, and some interesting history. would really love to know who had the patience to do this!

“The oddest, most fascinating place I've visited this year!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2014

We visited the Shell Grotto on out trip to Kent, and it was one of the highlights of the trip. It's eccentric, fascinating, and beautiful, with very friendly staff. The visit has left me guessing about the Grotto's origins, it's a real puzzle! Do visit if you're in the area, it's very reasonably priced, and you'll never see anything like it.
