“Just an okay stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

We stayed at the Granville Inn for one night. Our room was very disappointing. We looked at several rooms during the Thanksgiving weekend when we stayed across the street. The rooms were very charming, large, included a couch, love seat, or several chairs. The drapes and bed coverings were very pretty and seemed deluxe. We were anticipating a lovely room. However, the room we stayed in this weekend was plain. There was a gold/beige colored duvet on the bed, no wall paper on the walls, very sheer curtains that did NOT block out any daylight, only one small chair to sit on while watching tv, and had an end table on only one side of the bed. The shower was small, had a slanted ceiling so don't turn around too quickly or you'd hit your head. The shower curtain was so long, you had to stand on it in the shower. To top it all, the water in the shower was cold. We received an apology when checking out and were told we should have called down. A little difficult after you're already in the shower. We paid $135 a night for this room, the same as people staying in the charming deluxe rooms. It was a disappointing room, so when we return, and we will as we have family in town, we'll ask to see the room before checking in. I sent Granville Inn a copy of this 24 hours prior to submitting, in case they wanted to comment or issue a voucher for future use. I did not hear anything from them.

Room Tip: Skip Room 42 unless you want to be awaken at dawn and don't care about the decor. Of course, if...

The Inn is very nice, no amenities - the restaurant is very nice the food very good- for the prices the service sucks - no staff to be found - no management to talk to - who's running the place -
for fine dining go somewhere else.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

I hate to write a negative review, however this hotel/restaurant merits such. I have a fair amount of experience with the Granville Inn- I stay there every other week for business reasons. Were I in control of the location of my stays, I promise I'd stay elsewhere!

The restaurant is overpriced for what it offers- medium to low quality food at prices which are unjustified. The service at the restaurant has quite uniformly been negative too- slow service, relatively unhelpful servers. Though it would be convenient to be able to eat at the restaurant at which I stay, I've stopped eating at the GI because it's simply a poor choice. I'm sure others have had better experiences, however one ought to know going into the restaurant that the chances of a poor experience are not insignificant.

The hotel portion is really the biggest letdown. The rooms are inconsistent to an extreme degree. As someone who has stayed in *many* of the rooms, I can say that some are alright and almost look like "real" hotel rooms. The majority, though, are eclectically decorated, cramped, and generally uncomfortable (this includes the sometimes terrible washrooms). Noise has also been an issue. Another reviewer noted that you can hear everything which goes on in adjacent rooms- he/she was correct. Additionally, this reviewer noted that the GI sometimes has LOUD music playing which they refuse to turn down- this is also quite true. The music can radiate through the hotel, and remains audible even on higher floors...

What more is there to say? It's an interesting hotel, no question- I've never seen a place that, were it given good management and some TLC, could be so interesting. However, the possibility that it could possibly become nice given the right circumstances does not justify a current stay in a sub-par hotel.

We wanted a little getaway for New Years and decided to try the Granville Inn. It was a magical evening in many ways. It was snowing pretty hard as we arrived so the entire village looked like a scene out of a movie; all the Christmas decorations glowing in the snow, the local horse and carriage could be heard clip clopping up and down Broadway all evening. The lovely Inn all decked out in it's finest. While I had dined at the Inn before and had high expectations for our dinner, I had never stayed at the Inn before. We had a small suite called the Baron Suite. It was quite charming. While the hallways enroute were definately showing the wear and tear of time, the suite itself was nice. Many windows, all of which opened with simple levers and swung outward letting us lean on the sills and enjoy the beauty of all the snow coming down. Simple tasteful and clean furnishings although the sleeper sofa was in need of reinforments, it sagged terribly when sat upon. The queen bed in the bedroom was adequate. The very firm mattress (better than a soft saggy one) did not offer the best sleep but wasn't the worst hotel bed I ever slept in. Conversations in the hall and the ajoining room were a bit distracting but places this old are frequently a bit noisy. Our dinner was really superb. They had a special menu for new years eve and the food and the service were fantastic. The dining room which is always beautiful was especially attractive all trimmed in freash garland. There were fires buring in all the fireplaces, the lobby, the restaurant and in the charming pub. All in all we had a fun and memorable evening!

Granville, Ohio is arguably one of that state's more picturesque villages. Home of Dennison University, it recalls some of New England's charming small college or prep school towns, and the Granville Inn remains of of the area's most charming lodging options. But alas, the old gal is showing her age. Frayed carpets and chipped paint... oddly arranged rooms, some with scant furnishings... dated, musty paint schemes... low lighting... all suggest a general lack of innkeeper attention -- or sadly, perhaps a lack of funds.

On two recent stays -- it's a mid route stop-over for trips from Virginia to our Lake Michigan summer house -- we had reasonably satisfactory stays, but couldn't help wonder what a little TLC might do to give the inn a much needed cosmetic refresh. The staff didn't help, either. Upon check-in, it was all we could do to get the young lady behind the desk to leave her chair to greet us, much less acknowledge that a new guest had arrived. (I guess we're just used to hoteliers greeting arriving guests with enthusiasm...) Anyway, my smarty pants comments probably didn't help our case and we were directed to what had to be the worst room in the inn (#32) -- maybe the worst room in any inn. Too tired to object after a nine hour drive, we accepted our fate, went down to dinner, and retired early, enjoying the buzz from a few drinks and a glass or two of wine.

Which leads us to the dining room. The food's not bad, although in fairness, we haven't sampled enough of it to comment with any conviction. I'm betting that the food is reliably delicious and we found the pub quite pleasant, and its new bartender to be both professional and welcoming.

Fast forward a week later to our return trip. Again, not wanting to deal with nearby Columbus' sketchy hotel offerings, we again checked into the GI, only this time with the manager's recommendation of "the best room." This time 'round, despite the room's dated decor and amenities, the overall ambiance was much improved.

My advice? If you're traveling though mid Ohio, an area not especially noted for exceptional lodging options, the GI can be a pleasant choice... so long as you check the room in advance. And if the inn's owner ever decides to invest in bringing the property up to more contemporary lodging quality standards, the place could be a standout.

Room Tip: I'm reluctant to disclose the innkeeper's recommendation of the "best room," becau...

Granville is an excellent little town for a B & B-type stay, and we found the Granville Inn to be just fine. This is an early 20th century manor house with about 30 rooms. It's located on the main drag just a block from the town center where there are shops, restaurants, etc. Our Traditional Queen room was average sized, but well outfitted. It faced the pretty main street, but there was no street noise at all. The inn is similar to an old European boutique hotel, so can be a little dark in spots, but you should just enjoy the history. Parking for us was just steps from the front door, but these spaces are somewhat limited, so there is an overflow lot next door to the inn if it's busier (on this Monday night there were only a few guests). Our only issue with the hotel was that the free continental breakfast (served in the pub) was not very impressive---mostly just coffee, juice and basic pastry. Perhaps on the weekends a better breakfast is served.

A major plus for the Granville Inn is its restaurant, which has a creative menu and a good, reasonably priced wine list---a real fine dining experience. The food overall was excellent, and our server did a fine job. We sat on the large covered patio, and the light rain outside made for a very nice dining atmosphere. There is a nice pub adjacent to the restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the main street have the best view, and are quiet.

We stayed during a college visit tour. Enjoyed a very comfortable room. Staff were friendly. The public areas were interesting. Had an excellent dinner in the hotel dining room. Breakfast was great. Especially nice continental options such as good breads and granola. Wished we had had more time to explore the town.
