“Nice room shame about the noise!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2010

Not worth 60pds a night. The room and ensuite were lovely - nice products in the bathroom. No frendly welcome or goodbye. The free Wifi was not reliable and didn't work in the room at all - had to go to the bar. Very loud noise till nearly 1 am. No clock or hairdryer. Breakfast was adequate.

We recieved a great welcome when we first arrived at The White Horse, the room was clean and very large with views of the extremely picturesque village. The bathroom was also clean and well equipped. We decided on the first night on recommendation from the staff to try the local Italian restaurant which was fabulous.

We had been told when we booked that there was a disco on the Friday night, so we were expecting it to be noisy, but after our dinner we actually stayed downstairs and had a drink, there was a great atmosphere and good music. It all started quietening down just after midnight which was great for us, but it might have been a bit loud for children. Apparently they only have a disco once a month, so might be worth asking when you book.

After having breakfast the following morning we decided that we would have dinner at the pub that night. The breakfast was great and the staff very accomodating, dinner that night was also well priced and very nice. A great stay in a very nice country village pub.

Part of this dreadful experience was my own fault, I knew it was a pub when booking and failed to ask questions like - What are your opening hours? How would you describe your clientele? Do you have live music/discos and if so when and what etc. We arrived late afternoon for a two night stay and left before 11pm the same evening just as a scuffle was breaking out in the rear garden. We were not expecting anything particularly great (regardless of the impression given on their web site) and first impressions lived up to our expectations. Unfortunately it then went down hill.
It became apparent fairly quickly that the venue was pretty much the only pub around and was popular with the local youth of the area.

In fairness the room was big and the toilet/shower room appeared fine on arrival. There is a reasonable amount of drawer space and a wardrobe although as it has no hangers it was of little use. We had a walk around Cranbrook and returned to the room with some fruit juice. The walk up the stairs was very dark and the corridor lights did not work. There was a very strange and quite unpleasant smell in the corridor although the room was merely a bit musty. Some of the lights in the room did not work either.

We went to use the drinking glasses but I had to wash them first. The cups were even worse and took considerable effort to make useable. The pubs web site says it serves good food but we quickly decided that if this was the standard of cleanliness of the crockery we would not be eating there.

We had a pleasant meal elsewhere and returned just before 10pm. We gingerly made our way around the underage loud teenagers hanging around outside the premises who were clearly hoping to attract the attention of someone inside. We realised then that there was a disco inside the premises.

We made our way back up the strange smelling stairs and settled down in our room. It would be unfair to say this is the loudest music we have ever come across but the banging base and noisy teenagers were suitably annoying. As we sat trying to watch TV it suddenly dawned on us why the lady that showed us to our room had asked us if we were likely to want access after 2am - that would be when they closed. Our general feeling of unease increased but we told ourselves it was only for two nights. When the toilet suddenly backed up and threatened to flood the floor with excrement we had had enough, packed our bags and left leaving the key on the outside of the room door. We have never left a venue before and have had many varying experiences. The pub has a contact number for us but has made no attempt to ask why we left..
