“A perfect long weekend”

Some of my friends arrived at Tapnell half an hour before us, and rang us to say "It's amazing, you're going to love it". They were right.
Tapnell is fantastic. So many large rental houses are like show homes or hotels. Tapnell has all the grandeur but is fun, and relaxed and homely.

Charlotte had made us a huge lasagne, described by many as 'the best lasagne they'd ever had'. I can't think of a single way the weekend could've been better. We didn't want to leave and we will certainly be back.

“An A1 experience from beginning to end!”

A large number of us stayed at Tapnell Manor for the weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday. From the moment we arrived until the time we had to (very reluctantly) pull ourselves away down the extensive driveway, this place very much cut the mustard. In fact we were constantly surprised and overwhelmed by everything on offer!

Let's start with the Aga (as we did every morning and simply the best place to begin a cold winter's day) - that beast could cook a horse with the space available, ensuring evenly cooked food from hoof to tail. The activity in the large rustic eat-in kitchen centres around the Aga and provides a point of reference should you get lost (or lose yourself) in this sprawling labyrinth.

Downstairs there are also several large living areas complete with enormous fireplaces and more than enough scatter cushions. Our host for the weekend hired a hot tub and despite the sub-zero temperatures at night, we spent much of the evening outside (trying our hardest to stay under the water).

For fans of hidden corridors and rainforest showers, upstairs is where it's at. With 10(?) bedrooms you can take your pick but good luck finding it again! Many of the rooms are ensuite and the bathrooms come complete with shower heads the size of a serving plate.

Heading outside, the beautiful gardens are a real treat. This end of the Isle of Wight is a walker's paradise but a top stroll lies on your doorstep. Head towards the big pond and follow the narrow path over stepping stones and along the hedgerow for an incredible view of the sea at the other end. Follow that round to meet some chickens with excellent beaks.

I can not recommend highly enough getting yourself off to Tapnell Manor with a big group of friends, plenty of booze and a bucket full of steak from a quality butcher. You will have the time of your lives - all in one of the most picturesque spots in the UK. We will definitely be back!

“A joy!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

Tapnell Manor fully met the needs of our party of 13 adults and 5 younger ones. Directions were easy to follow and we were warmly received. It took us such a long time to explore! There are so many nooks and crannies with different routes to the bedrooms. Allocating these was no mean feat - we were spoilt for choice. The two huge lounges were so atmospheric with the log fires underway. Logs galore appeared at our front door on a daily basis. Wifi was effective.
We found the kitchen to be very well equipped and certainly did not feel that we wanted for anything. Different styles of crockery etc. added to the charm. Never having used an AGA before, we thought this could be problematic but it turned out to be easy, in fact brilliant. The games room just off the kitchen was full of quality toys, suitable for a wide range of ages. Ample table tennis balls too.
The dining table was used in the evenings, with supplied candles making it very atmospheric. For breakfast the huge table in the conservatory was perfect.
The grounds are amazing and superbly cared for. We booked a farm tour with Charlotte and she was just brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she was so friendly and cheerful, interacting well with all of our party. She took us to the nearby hen caravan, where we were invited to help ourselves to eggs at any time. We did! A tour of the eco-camping was sufficiently impressive for one of our party to book for Easter. Well done Charlotte and thank you.
All in all we had a great time. Tapnell Manor has real character and we look forward to returning.

“A lovely stay but could easily be improved to be a VERY lovely stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012 for a stay in July 2012

The position of this Manor house is idyllic, the views stunning and the accommodation is very acceptable. However it was somewhat disappointing to find cobwebs and dead flies everywhere, there was not a full set of matching crockery, or cutlery, mugs, glasses for 14 people, the garden table was literally falling apart , and most of the beds had 13 tog duvets on which was totally unbearable in high July temperatures. Some of the bedlinen was very old, unfashionable and tired and sewn up where it was torn. The conservatory was incredibly hot during our beautiful weather week, and the windows had evidently not been opened in months as they were almost sealed shut, and there was no winder to open the roof windows. There was dirty laundry left in the utility area, including underwear !
Sadly our first two nights were totally disturbed by a Stag weekend party staying in the Eco tents just 20 metres or so from the edge of the house, and we were kept awake until 3.00am ! Not a very restful start to our holiday.
I would recommend this house to anybody but I do feel that it is very over priced for the state of the above mentioned things, and felt badly for my Mum who had booked this as a real treat for us all. The price reflects a 5 star property and Tapnell Manor is really more like a 3 star property. It would have been better for us with seven children to have more twin rooms as they had to share double beds which isn't ideal.
We had the most amazing week of weather and the sunsets were beautiful. The farm staff were super and took the kids for a trailer ride to see the cows. There was no questionnaire or satisfaction form to fill in when leaving the property and the Proprietor did not come to see us off / say Goodbye so they are probably oblivious to most of this.
