The Royal Esplanade Hotel. Ryde
My partner and I stayed here October 18th to 21st for a weekend break with National Holidays. £119 per person for 3 nights’ bed, breakfast and evening meal (real bargain).
After reading some awful reviews about this hotel, we were a bit worried as to what we would find.
We were allotted room 7a on the first floor, after walking along a long corridor we came to our room, which we were expecting it to be a dive (according to some reviews). Well the room was good, nice and clean, clean sheets, towels, everything was ok. The view out of the window only showed a room opposite and a little yard below. That did not matter to us as we only used the room to sleep in. The hotel is an old Victorian building and in places it shows its age and it is like a rabbit warren with several passages, but it adds to the charm of the building.
The meals were always served hot, in good portions and plenty of choice and a good selection. For the price could not fault them.
There is a bar with a lounge, seats about 30 plus, a pool room and an entertainment room. Just one fault with the entertainment room, its miles from the bar. To get to the bar you have to walk through the reception area, then through the restaurant to reach it. Then again that could be a good thing because you miss the entertainment, which was awful while we were there. The prices are not that bad, beer £3.40 and larger £3.50 per pint. Although there is a Wetherspoons 5 minute walk away.
At the rear of the pool room there is a smoking area for you smokers, large area with plenty of seats, tables and ash trays, but no where under cover if it rains. In summer it looks as though it’s a lovely area, a proper sun trap, so the none smokers will claim it as theirs lol.
There is free wifi but only near the reception area or sat in the entertainment room.
Just across the road from the hotel is the, bus station, train station and hovercraft port so going out for trips is brilliant, try Shanklin old town.
We would go to this hotel again but for longer, a good 2 star hotel.
we stayed in room 7a, very quiet

Thank you for your recent comments on trip advisor, I am glad you enjoyed your overall break in October and that you found it great value for money.
I am also glad that you appreciated the Victorian charm that many people love about our hotel, It sounds like you took advantage of all of our facilities and you are right about our terrace at the rear of the bar being a perfect place in the summer to relax and catch some sun, so you will definitely have to make a return visit during the warmer months.
I am sorry to hear that the entertainment was not to your liking, this is something that is extremely hard to judge as we have guests coming from all areas of the country so we do try to provide something that would suit all tastes.
Thank you once again for taking the time to review your thoughts on your recent stay.
