My family and I booked a weekend at Thorness through the Sun £9.50 holiday scheme, and I didn't have very high hopes and pre-warned my kids not to expect too much! However when we arrived we were very impressed with our caravan even though it was 'Bronze' standard (ie the lowest). It was very clean, comfortable and much more modern than expected. There was a flatscreen tv, microwave, toaster and everything was in good working order. Double bed was a bit worn down, you could feel the springs, but we still slept well.
The park itself is beautiful, set in a lovely oak woodland with a path directly down to the beach. The beach isn't picture perfect but there is some sand for castles, and when the tide goes out it is great for rockpooling. On site there is an indoor pool which, although small, is lovely and warm and has a small water slide which we all enjoyed. The restaurant has a very good menu at reasonable prices for a campsite. There is a large showbar which has entertainment every night, we didn't get to enjoy it for personal reasons but it seems good for family nights out. The supermarket on site is pretty well stocked too.
All in all we found Thorness Bay to be a lovely peaceful park, it has everything you need for a family break without being quite as loud and OTT as larger parks. Plus, the Isle of Wight itself is a stunning place for a family holiday and I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks to all at Thorness for making our stay so enjoyable at such a bargain price....we will be back next year!
