We visited on Saturday lunchtime, 27 July, after a visit to the nearby Zoological Museum. We had a pretty good meal - not perfect - but pretty good nonetheless. After returning home we looked at the TripAdvisor reviews and were a little surprised at the negative reviews, though from the couple of things that were not right we can understand where The Akeman is going wrong - consistency. We started with the calamari and also the seared scallops. The calamari were light, fresh, and accompanied by a quality homemade aioli that did not overpower the squid. The 3 scallops were large and thick, and were delicious presented on a bed of rocket with an asian chilli dressing. Very tasty indeed, but the scallops needed an extra 20 seconds in the pan as they were still room temperature in the center and so just not quite cooked through. For mains we had crab linguini and crayfish risotto. The large portion of linguini was perfectly al dente and came with a generous amount of crab. From the menu description we had expected a more zingy white wine sauce with fresh tomato than the tomato-wine style presented. I have had the dish the way The Akeman does it before elsewhere and must say that The Akeman's dish was superior. The risotto was overcooked and a little dry, but the flavour was still good and again the crayfish was abundant in the dish. Dessert was a raspberry Eton Mess - truly excellent, and not as overpowering as others I have tried elsewhere. The cream was balanced beautifully by the not overly-sweet meringues and tart raspberries that bled through the again sizeable portion that was perfect for 2 to share. The service from our waitress was excellent - friendly, efficient and professional. Whilst there are a couple of things that can be improved I am still happy to give the restaurant a rating of Very Good - I believe it is appropriate and reinforces that we look forward to returning in the near future...especially while the weather remains warm as the outdoor tables were very nice to sit at.
