5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

We stayed here before day at the Harry Potter Studios. Friendly staff and great breakfast. Family room made up correctly with 4 beds (sofabed spaces). Car park is okay and well lit. Next door to a Sainsburys if you fancy getting some snacks!

Clean modern hotel and pleasant view over the canal was nice but unfortunately stay was marred by staff on reception who offered a lacklustre welcome and service.
Full marks to the chambermaids though who even left a bag outside with clean towels, toilet roll, coffee/tea bags etc whilst i was in the room one day.

Dear guest, thank you for your recent comments and for your feedback about the welcome you received which was not up to our usual standard. I have passed your comments onto the team as I know they share our vision of ensuring all guests receive great customer service so may I apologise that we failed you in this instance. Thank you for your feedback regarding the maids-again this has been passed onto them to let them know how pleased you were with their service. Thank you again and we do hope to see you again soon.

I stayed here as part of a coach trip during a very hot weekend. We arrived having had a coach with no air conditioning and it was 33 degrees centigrade outside so we were all very keen to get into our rooms where I was pleasantly greeted with an air conditioning unit!! :) the rooms and reception were very clean and new and I cannot fault anything there!
We had an evening meal as part of our package but the food was very much bland and there was only 2 choices, chicken and veg, or cottage pie and veg neither to which I wanted. Very much like a school canteen and served by 2 staff, 1 of which was quite rude as some people were unaware they could only enter the food area a in a certain direction.
Drinks and snacks in the bar were quite expensive so try and take your own beforehand.
Good nights sleep and great shower amenities in the room, would go again :)

I am staying at this hotel every week, and this can make me over critical, but I need to admit, it is the worse place I ever stayed in my professional life. Of course, when I was student I was in youth hostel, but this is another story...

Staff is not what you would expect. After 4 years they not yet understand who you are and your basic needs. Their committment to customer service, is simply not existing.
The food is orrible: breakfast's fruit is not even decent.
Rooms are noisy: never take one on the main road side if you plan to sleep.
Avoid any at the bottom: a new building is in construction.
Rooms' doors do not get locked well. Always check if you want to avoid any surprise.
I have a long list of issue, but is not even worth sharing.
I would not reccomend this place. There are much better ones in the area, but my company keeps on booking there....

Anyway, it is clean.

M.

Room Tip: Ask a room on top floors, on parking side.

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights with family as part of trip to visit the sites in London.

Hotel is brand new so very fresh and modern, opposite a canal and pub / restaurant.

Well positioned not far from motorway close to but not actually in, Hemel Hempstead, and St Albans which is very nice.

Hotel is located a few minutes’ walk from Apsley main railway station where 30mins takes you into the center of London by train.

Reasonable amount of parking but could be tight if hotel full.

Buffet style breakfast was reasonable for the price, with mix of hot and cold items.

Only issue with this hotel is room size if party if more than 2 – we had a 16 son staying with us on a pull down sofa bed. Rooms are all same size regardless of number of occupants. Not much room to "swing that cat" when sofa bed is down. Really too small for families.

Rooms are clean, modern and well appointed. Breakfast area and other public areas are clean and airy.

Staff are friendly and helpful.

Would stay again if price was right and only my wife and I staying due to room size. Good rates on HI web site.

Nice modern hotel in great location.

Evening dinner meals were limited due to a shortage of food and as a result a group elderlies next to us resorted to buying sandwiches out the vending machine, Poor effort. Breakfast buffet was better but could do with a more sufficient layout. Thank you to the staff at the front desk for a friendly service

Dear William
Thank you for your review about your recent stay. I was disappointed to hear that some food items were not available during dinner. After speaking to my team we will ensure extra measures are in place to ensure the ordering of the menu items is sufficient to not run out of anything for our guests. We take feedback very seriously and will ensure we also review the layout of the breakfast buffet to ensure it runs more efficiently. The great comments regarding the front desk team have been passed onto them.
We do hope you will choose Holiday Inn Express again in the future.

Stayed overnight on the way back from holiday - bargain price, very clean, helpful staff, no issues at all. Obviously not meant to be a luxury hotel but rooms are more than adequate, plenty of free breakfast, flat screen TV - superior to other similar chains and considerably cheaper.
