“Lovely relaxing stay, scrumptious food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013 via mobile

Have now stayed twice at this hotel in last 6 months with friends, both occasions we had a deal for dinner, bed and breakfast and cream tea!

As other reviews have suggested the rooms are a little tired (particularly the bathrooms) but they are spacious and comfortable. And frankly on a girls weekend much more important to us are relaxing, comfortable surroundings and friendly staff!

Having now eaten in the restaurant twice I can honestly say we all cleared the plates of all 3 courses - food is yummy!!! And fab given included in our deal, restaurant comfy with nice atmosphere. The 'lounge' where afternoon tea was served has little daylight and is a tad gloomy but not our main focus faced with scones and cream!

Sometimes when you visit a hotel where a wedding is taking place that you aren't part of you can feel in the way or second best, that is not the case here and they keep the wedding guests separate beautifully so everyone feels welcome!

It is of course tragic what occurred the weekend after our stay but it will not stop us visiting again and wish the staff all the success they deserve, I have no doubt they will have done all they could.

Down Hall is a beautiful building. We booked afternoon tea in honour of a friends birthday and had high hopes having checked out the menu and the website. On entering the building it appeared shabby and 'faded' rather than opulant. We expected to be seated in a dining room with tables but instead were shown into a room with tired looking sofa's. We were the only people in the room and apart from a baby crying in the bar next door, the room was devoid of chat, music and atmosphere. The tea itself was grossly overpiced for four finger sandwiches each which were average. Tiny slivers if cake which were below average (the small chocolate eclairs had no cream inside), and the star of the show, the tea, was made with teabags and was hot but had little taste. The scones were the one redeeming feature which were warm and comforting. But I would not go back.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Beautiful setting and a very impressive building. Room was very big, a little dated particularly the bathroom. Reasonably clean. You'd never reach those cobwebs as the ceilings are so high! Breakfast was plentiful and very nice. Evening meal was nice but expensive fussy food and not much of it! Greater and more reasonably priced bar menu would be beneficial to business users on a budget.

We stayed at the Down Hall on Thursday 25th April for one night.

The room was lovely, very spacious! And the view was lovely too!

We got free champagne as part of our offer which was a bonus :)

The food was good, evening meal was a bit pricey but you expect that at a place like this.

We found out that the day after we left a couple were found dead in the pool... don't let this put you off going as it is a really lovely hotel with lovely grounds.

Went on W/end break for murder mystery which turned
out to be true
2 people were found dead in the swimming pol
#The staff tried there best to make things right but our evening did not happen
Our room was very clean and the view was great overlooking the grounds
the food was middle of the road nothing special but as we were supposed to be on a special event we thought it was good value
The drinks are very expensive if they made them cheaper people would buy more

Room Tip: had room 407 which had a few things wrong like a small hole in middle of carpet and a bit...

Yesterday my husband and I drove to Down Hall for a one night special offer stay. The outside and grounds look fabulous and the building itself is beautiful on the outside. There was a wedding party having photographs taken and it added to the initial splendour. Inside we checked in quickly and given directions to our room. The lift is out of action, no problem to us, on first floor only to take up our bags. Hallway and stairs are long overdue in updating with fading tatty patterned carpet and Zoffany wallpaper, all the rage about 20 years ago.
Once inside the room, it was a bit of a slap in the face. Everything look tired and miserable from carpets curtains to scratched furniture and a horrid dingy bathroom with s faint smell of drains. The carpet was filthy and really badly stained, totally unacceptable at any price. Didnt want to walk on it without shoes. Bedding was clean and white.
Dinner was quite good, staff quite young and inexperienced but friendly and willing. Free bottle red plonk, meal was £65 so not excessive.
Bar area seen better days but adequate. We didn't do much exploring of common areas as it was late so we put that off till next morning.
There was a huge amount of sustained noise from wedding guests leaving and a lot of talking in grounds below our room, till early hours which I found a bit annoying, not sure if we should have been made aware but obviously nodded off eventually.
At breakfast, we both had self service cooked English which was clearly not fresh ingredients, ie tinned tomatoes and mushrooms and mass produced hash browns etc. nothing marvellous but edible, then went outside for a walk.
We immediately noticed a large police presence and a lot of blue tape cordoning areas off. We discovered that, tragically, the previous evening at around 7.30 pm the bodies of a man and woman were found in the swimming pool.
We concluded this was probably partly the cause of such a lot of noise and cars coming and going during the evening.
Having abandoned our plans to roam the grounds to any great extent, we left shortly afterwards.
If I'm honest Down Hall is all wrapping, no present, it needs a huge injection of capital to modernise it, the building is beautiful and could be a fabulous place to stay, just don't pay the full price, we took a deal with a Wowcher so didn't feel cheated, even so, won't rush back.

My wife and I had a mini break at Down Hall my impression of the hotel was very good but needs a fine tune up. When you go to a hotel like this part of the attraction is the old furniture and fitting but a duster needs to be used to keep them looking there best. Our room 304 on the ground floor was large with a French window to the grounds and as the weather was good it was a good asset the bathroom was large with marble fittings and him & hers wash basins and the bed was spot on.
We had a meal in the restaurant which was ok but not the best the fish starter my wife had had to go back Pickled Mackerel it looked good but it was to strong in smell with the pickled vegetables for my wife and my wife loves pickled fish , I will put this down to a bad choice as more than one was serviced in the restaurant while we were there the head waiter changed it for something else which was fine the red wine which came with the meal was really good all in all it was a good mini break
