Description: The Duke's Head serves modern British cuisine in the heart of the quintessential Essex village. 'Village Pub & Dining' explains our concept perfectly. A warm, friendly, atmospheric pub, which happens to do excellent, locally sourced food! Along with friendly, helpful service, perfect pints and very good wine, this is somewhere that anyone would like to spend a few hours. Relaxing on our sunny patio under pretty parasols, with the children running in the garden or hiding in the quaint tree house or warming you feet in front of a roaring fire, with your dog by your side! Whatever the weather, a warm welcome is always guaranteed at The Duke's Head.

“Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

We were staying at Down Hall, and read about The Duke's Head in the local magazine. After doing a bit of research we booked a table for a meal on 09/02/13. And we are so glad we did! The food was truly wonderful.

We had three courses each, starting with the pigeon and pheasant terrine (claimed by my boyfriend to be the best he had ever tasted!) and I had the super tasty spinach and field mushroom stack. For mains, I had steak, which was cooked to perfection, and he had the moroccan lamb. We had ordered a side of courgette fries, which although delicious, were completely unnecessary as the food portions were generous to say the least.

After a break, we had puddings. My cookie and his cheese and biscuits finished the meal nicely. A really lovely pub, with stunning food. Definitely worth a visit!

“Quality food and good service, great place for lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

I had lunch with my sister at the Dukes Head today and we could not have chosen better. The pub had a nice atmosphere and was warm and cosy from the real fire. The food was excellent, with ingredients sourced locally and of known providence (they even made their own corned beef for the hash, rather than buying it in). The service was also very good, neither intrusive nor lacking. We'd not been there before but will most definitely return. Next time I wil book ahead though, as it was surpriisngly busy for a weekday and it would be a shame to be disappointed if there were no tables available.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We use this pub/restaurant every Friday it really is that good, they have just brought in a new winter menu which is very good.We often walk the dog across the fields and end up here(dog friendly)for a pint and a glass of wine, the local fizz ,Three Squirrels is excellent so I am told!.Liz and Justin deserve all the success that comes their way a lot of hard work has gone into making this the busy restaurant it is.

“Very Nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

We had booked an overnight stay at Downhall Hotel and were unable to get into the restaurant there so drove to The Dukes Head. Very quiet, we were the only people in there apart from the owners and a couple of bar staff. Meal was very reasonable, 3 courses each and was £60 including a glass of wine and a diet coke. Very clean and friendly staff too.
