“Great nights stay at the Green Man!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

Have just returned from an excellent one night stay at The Green Man, Fownhope. We were warmly greeted by a charming member of staff and shown to our room which was superb, very spacious, great bathroom, extremely comfy bed and a nice view of the garden. We enjoyed a drink in the atmospheric bar, the whole building has a great feel about it, before taking dinner in the restaurant. A great menu and extensive wine list, the food was beautifully presented and most enjoyable, the staff were spot on perfect in their attentiveness and knowledge. A great place to stay before enjoying a cookery course at the nearby Indian cookery school. Would be happy to return and would probably choose the same room again (8) as enjoyed the position on the end of the building overlooking the garden.

Room Tip: We had room 8. On the end of the building overlooking the garden and very quiet.

Just come back from a weekend stay at The Green Man.
On arrival got a very friendly greeting at reception. Very smooth check-in. Shown to our rooms - which were excellent.
Fabulous shower, complimentary shower gel, shampoo and soap, comfortable beds. Complementary tea, coffee, water. Only thing I would say was missing was a waste bin in the room.
Very pleasant garden area to sit and enjoy the sun with a drink from the bar!
On arrival we booked a table in the restaurant, we were told this was the last table and that we would be in a private room - which we decided would be OK.
After being shown to our table we made our choices from the menu. Starters and mains served quite quickly. Food was excellent - but as previous reviewers have said a little expensive (as is the wine list). But the "blip" I mention came when we were waiting to order coffee and deserts. We appeared to have been "forgotten". Had to go to the bar a couple of times to remind the staff we were in the room!
After a very good night sleep - no road or people noise! Breakfast is served between 8am and 9.30am
You have a wide choice from the menu, should please everyone.
Apart from the "blip" at dinner time the service was excellent. All staff very friendly and helpful
Would stay here again and would recommend.

Stayed for two nights on a fishing trip in the area and was thoroughly impressed. Room was a bit minimalist but very clean with great bed and bedding, good towels, and a modern bathroom. Comfortable lounge areas and nice outdoor space too - I loved the old-fashioned lavender borders.
Breakfast was good and dinner both nights was classy. Some trip advisor comments on price but quality of produce and cooking was really excellent and portion-size was ample so I felt it was pretty good value. Try the steaks. The hotel provided sandwiches for us on both days and the same goes for these - its a kitchen with a generous spirit! Good beers in the bar - but another table for drinkers rather than diners would be be a bit more welcoming.
A real high point though is the service. Engaging, informal (but not overly so), interested, and with a so-helpful attitude. I'll be back.

What a beautiful place to stay!

Stayed here for one night and I am already planning my return.
On arrival the greeting was professional and welcoming and we were assisted to our rooms. All the staff are smartly dressed and always smiling which is nice to see.
The decor is a great combination of modern and old English style and on checkout it was nice to hear some history of the place from the staff.
The rooms are gorgeous and of a high standard.
Large beds with comfy mattress and pillows.
Tea and coffee making facilities are tidied away neatly in smart little boxes.
The on-suite was stunning with plenty of room.
The food is a little pricey but was very nice. The only negative I have was the service was a little slow during the evening meal and we did feel forgotten about at times. However the restaurant was very busy and staff retained their professionalism and happy disposition at all times.
Breakfast was fantastic, no complaints!

The whole place was of a high standard and kept very clean at all times. The outside areas are lovely day and night and provide very pleasant areas to sit with a chilled glass of wine.

I will definitely be returning, excellent value for money, lovely staff and a beautiful place to stay.
Well done Greenman!

Six had lunch last week. Food, service and beer were all good in comfortable surroundings. A little on the expensive side but my risotto was very good. Three real ales were available, including Wye Valley HPA and Dartmoor and all in excellent condition. If I lived nearby instead of 170 miles away I would go back again regularly.

Went for a meal with friends. Food very nicely presented and desserts are lovely but a bit pricey, they were rather busy, but that didn't matter. Never stayed overnight so unable to rate. Gardens are lovely, a big Bright light exiting from the car park is too strong needs to be angled away a little so it doesn't blind you.
Staff are very friendly and efficient. In a lovely area of Herefordshire.

.
Gone are the heavy velour curtains, tapestry cushions, hunting prints, horse brasses and simple wafts of Sunday roast and beer that I knew from my youth of thirty odd years ago. Back then, it was a trad' village cocoon: the log fire you didn’t want to leave, the soporific head-nodding conversations, the sense of tradition, locals propping up the bar and drinking beer from glasses with handles and moaning about the youth of today – us! So if you’re a tourist looking for that quaint charm of merrie olde England, be prepared for where we are at now. The wonderful wood panelling remains but there’s a certain designer greyness about the place, a sense of seriousness about the act of eating.
The effort is to be applauded though; it’s moving with the times and caters to the improvements in our palates as a nation with, paradoxically, offerings from a bygone era such as pigeon which currently shares the menu with exotics like lobster or seasonal grouse.
But it’s overpriced, that’s the bottom line. With mains around £22+, this is not cheap, not country pub grub; it’s designer food in a restaurant within a pub. It's an old argument that the price is meant to reflect quality ingredients, highly skilled cooking techniques and presentation over quantity, but really, you should have enough to eat, surely? A side order of mushroom sauce at £2.50 comes in a jug that belongs in a doll’s house, that's just stingy. There were inconsistencies too in the flavour of the game from one portion to another.
The fillet stake was served on a wooden chopping board with tiny tiny portions, ask for a plate!
On the plus side, serving dessert on a piece of slate worked much better and was a hit with many in our party. The service was excellent as was the welcome, and the bar staff were first rate. The wine list, pretty good. Toilets immaculate, big car park. Funky designer fascinators like antler chandeliers alleviate some of the blandness of the overspill dining room. Pre-dinner drinks on the lawn under the trees were a great summer memory. I have deep, deep affection for this pub and would still recommend it as one of the very best in the county and perfect for a special occasion. It’s still hugely popular and rightly so, I’m just never sure these days if such places can still really be called a pub.
Perhaps I’m just too grey!
