We arrived late afternoon on Sunday 21St April and checked in, where the receptionist enthused about upgrading us (there were two couples) this was a redletter Christmas present for all four of us. We were given the keys and pointed in the right direction with a comment, "come back and let me know, who is in which room", Room 29 was a 'four poster room' I am reluctant to use the term Four Poster as the term was used in it's loosest possible manner. We stayed in room 27 and I have to say if this is an upgrade, what were our original rooms like???.
We heard the train but stupidly thought that as it was a remote/rural station the noise would not be a problem after all the brochures does state the station is minutes away... wrong!! it's probably 150 yards, hardly minutes!!!!
We then went to the Drift for dinner and cannot fault them either on service, food, quality or quantity, it was a joy to eat there
About half an hour after we had gone to bed there was a knock at the door, think it was our friends I opened the door to find a staff member standing there and asking if she could collect the night attire a guest who had checked in earlier had left under the pillow, I am not in the habit of stripping the bed to check it is clean but maybe I should have done, so was this a case of the earlier gust hearing the trains decided to complain and change rooms?? maybe they were put into our original room, the receptionist was horrified that we got such a call.
The bathroom was clean and tidy but ... having to keep the basin tap running because the plug didn't work just wasted water, room 29's plug did not work either and apparently there was the sound of running water above the room for the couple of days we were there.
We are two couples who make the best of a bad job so stayed in the rooms allocated on the upgrade.
The train line is neither remote or rural being the main line with a high frequency service, yes again our fault for not checking the timetable but then it's something I don't tend to do.
The morning paper didn't turn up because they did not know my room number... err hold on the water ordered at the same time came to the correct room.
When we checked out and relayed our thoughts to the receptionist, she said as it was booked through an agent there was nothing she could do about it, then decided to cancel the charges for the crown breakfast, before trying to charge our friends for our water...
I think that while the Drift is a reason to go back the train line and average standard of service from the hotel side means we would probably not stay again or recommend the hotel to others.
The delay in writing this review comes about because I emailed Ms Turner at head office and as yet have still not had a reply, when I told the receptionist at head office about events she told me I was wrong and that it was a fantastic hotel as she had her wedding there.
There was a voucher stapled to our bills even before we complained offering a 3 for 2 night stay, is there a reason for the offer, I wonder??
Reading other reviews perhaps the rooms in the main building are of superior quality.
