“Wonderful mill house in a wonderful location... an unusual experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2009

We stayed in this B&B during the late-May bank holiday weekend for two nights. It was my partner's birthday treat, a weekend in the New Forest and a visit to the Go Ape! aerial course at Moors Vallery country park.

We chose this B&B partly because of its location, partly because of the Mill House building, but mainly because they were the only establishment that would allow us to stay for just two nights over a Bank Holiday weekend (I was due to be at work on the Bank Holiday Monday).

The Mill House itself is in the perfect location, the first building you come to as you enter the village of Beaulieu from the east. From the front , you can see the Beaulieu lake, around which stretches the village. From the back, there is a patio and the ever-changing view of the tidal Beaulieu River.

Our room, number 1 (of three) was a double with a view of the river. Within the room, there is an ensuite toilet and bath, with a handheld shower connected to the bath taps. The room contained a pile of leaflets for local attractions, some of which included money-off vouchers.

The service is very personal and attentive, which is where the 'unusal experience' part of my subject comes from. All guests have breakfast together, on the outdoor patio when the weather is good and in the dining room when it's not. There is also a communal living room with a TV and stereo, which guests can use whenever they like. The owners, Harriet and John, are happy to make you hot drinks whenever you like, as there are no drink facilities in rooms. They are also happy for you to use the dining room or patio to eat your evening meals.

The house and rooms contain personal items (the walk-in wardrobe in our room was full of their clothes) so this B&B isn't for those who want to shut themselves away from everyone else. It is, however, perfect for those who don't mind being sociable, particularly during breakfast and sharing the house with the owners and other guests. There are no locks on the doors or TVs or drink-making faciltiies in the rooms, but if you want truly personal, good old-fashioned hospitality in an amazing building in a wonderful location, the Mill House in Beaulieu is the one for you!

“Beautiful location, fantastic hosts. A real New Forest experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2009

The Mill House is an amazing old English home. John and Harriet were amazing hosts. We were made feel so welcome and comfortable as soon as we arrived.

We went to Beaulieu to enjoy the best of old England. I knew Beaulieu was a beautiful place. From the website, we guessed the Mill House was pretty special as well. We weren't disappointed. The house is old and full of character. Very clean. Very comfortable.

Harriet was always keen to make sure we had enough tea and biscuits. They B&B is right on the river. The views were amazing. We had afternoon tea and biscuits outside overlooking the river.

We then set off to enjoy Beaulieu, the amazing shops selling homemade chocolates and clotted cream ice cream etc. Then we walked to Bucklers Hard - really nice 2 mile leisurely walk.

In the evening, we came back to the B&B and sat and watched TV in the living room.

The next morning, we had breakfast in the kitchen. It was delicious. Harriet made sure we had plenty to eat.

If you are after 5* luxury or modern accommodation, then the Mill House isn't for you. If however you would like to enjoy the New Forest in an old house, with old fashioned hospitality, then I can't recommend anywhere better.

“Lovely B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2008

We stayed at Mill House in the village of Beaulieu, November 28th-29th, 2008. The house is big, sprawling and old and generally full of interesting pictures and things to look at. Lovely views of the river.
The bedrooms are also full of books and curios. We took 2 adjoining rooms with a shared bathroom. Great for families with children. Clean and airy.
This is not your typical impersonal B&B, where you only get a glimpse of the owners at breakfast. Harriet and John, whilst busy running the house, do everything they can to make you feel at home. There are no TVs in rooms nor tea-making facilities etc. Nor are there locks on doors. They will make you drinks at all times; you can share their living room downstairs (great log fire and big cosy sofas) and generally feel relaxed and part of the house. Some good chat about the house and area.
Breakfast: shared kitchen table with other guests. Generous with homemade juices, stewed apples, jams and the usual cooked everything. Superb.
Overall, a quintessential English experience. Very friendly. It's a pricey area and short of accomm (we felt) so this comes recommended.
