Myself and partner stayed at Moortown Lodge for a two night stay as we wanted to go mountain biking around the New Forest on a friday and saturday.
Firstly i'll say we were a little let down by the location of the place as the image on the website shows the hotel right next to a stream/river, however, the hotel is right on the side of a fairly busy main road and has no rustic charm as far as location. The river must have been behind the hotel which we never got to see as the hotel backs onto a David Lloyds gym.
Positives- the bedroom and breakfast room were very nicely presented indeed. Homely and modern, we were nicely surprised. The bed was too small though. My boyfriend is 6'2" and didn't sleep very well. The room though, as mentioned, was lovely and clean and warm.
I'll agree to a point to what the previous reviewer has said on the under average customer service.
When we checked in there wasn't much conversation at all and I was just given the key. I even tried to make conversation about the journey down, but the lady didn't seem too interested or keen to chat. My partner and myself never found the owners to be very rude, i'd describe it as just being like a little more effort could have been made.
We've stayed in lots of B&B's and hotels alike, and usually we find especially smaller scale establishments like Moortown Lodge to have very chatty, warm owners, who make you feel like they really want you to come and stay again and have a nice time.
When we sat down for breakfast, even when the lady saw we had come down and were waiting, there wasn't even a "Good morning" while she served the other guests, which makes all the difference and makes you feel valued as a guest.
The breakfast was fine. Nice bacon and sausages and nice coffee. We didn't have any cereals or fruits, as the fruit was canned and there wasn't much choice on the cereals. Overall, a nice enough breakfast, but for the price of the rooms (about £80-£90) I expect to be able to be saying nothing less then; the breakfast was delicious, instead of, it was 'fine'!
We did have a little chat on the last morning with the lady (She never introduced herself when we first checked in so i don't know her name, which i think is strange, and would be the first thing i would do on welcoming guests if i owned a hotel) about what we'd been up to on the previous day, but first impressions are so important.
Again i agree with the previous reviewer who complained that the hotel says breakfast from 7:30, but on arrival we were told it was from 8am on a weekend. They need to stipulate this on the website surely.
I also agree that the hotel/B&B is overpriced.
Next time we stay in the New Forest, we will be staying at a hotel/B&B with a much nicer location such as High Corner Inn which is nestled right in the forest.
If you are looking to go walking or mountain biking, I would not reccomend this hotel as realistically you have to drive to get anywhere, and it's nice to get to the hotel, and not think about the car for the time you're there and get back to nature on foot, bike, or horseback!
In summation; We wont be stayig here again, not because it's a bad hotel, it's nice, but overpriced, and doesn't have a fantastic location (not much charm being plonked on a main road near a fuel station and housing estate!) and while the owners were pleasant, a little more effort would have been nice...
