“Not for us....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

We stopped for lunch at The Old Beams Inn on route to the New Forest, but i would have to be very hungry to stop again. I couldn't eat my meal, it really was poor quality. Large portions but low quality food. Maybe serve less but higher quality foods?

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

This pub is lovely ,a very relaxing place to sit for a drink and also the eating area has really comfortable chairs which is a big bonus ..the food was delicious and about average price ...they were pretty busy although it was a Thursday lunchtime and a bit short staffed but the staff are so friendly and enjoyed a joke or two ...
Would highly recommend this pub.......

“Roaring fire”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

Have eaten here for a Sunday carvery previously and found the place to be good value for money, pleasant atmosphere and good food.

This visit was for a Saturday lunch with friends new to the area. Very quiet but on a wet day the roaring fire was a very welcoming site and made quite an impression with our friends. Sat on a large table near the fire and not far from the toilets which was a mistake as the smell from the toilets was somewhat strong. Staff were pleasant and friendly but given it was quiet the food did take longer than expected to arrive. My chicken and bacon salad 'Special' of the day was unfortunately not special but other starters were. My confit of duck was over seasoned with salt but very tender and enjoyable otherwise and was served with very good potato gratin. Slightly over priced perhaps.

Would return for a sunday carvery but not necessarily for a saturday lunch.

“Don't drive by this one...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

The Old Beams looks a little tired from the outside, the thatch is heavily coated in moss, there is a faded old red notice board outside advertising 'early bird' meals, the traditional pub sign is missing from its post, to be honest it always looks shut to me as I fly by on the A338. But appearances are deceptive and never being one to judge a book by its cover I recently paid it a visit for a spot of lunch.

What a wonderful surprise I had. The charming interior of the pub is spacious but intimate. I was greeted by a roaring open fire and a cheery barmaid. There was a good selection of beer on offer including cask ales which were served perfectly.

The kitchen was visible through a large serving hatch and is was very quickly apparent that the chefs were consummate professionals paying attention to every detail. I had a Ham Ploughman's and watched as the chef placed it onto the hatch and rang for service, he spent at least a minute arranging the two slices of bread in a fashion he was absolutely happy with! The home cooked ham was some of the best I've tasted, the bread was fresh and warm with butter soft and ready to spread. The salad was crisp and plentiful although there was no apple which should always adorn a Ploughman's Lunch (otherwise its a Ham Salad isn't it?). My partner had the soup of the day and she said it was absolutely delicious. The prices were a little higher than average but that was certainly reflected in the quality of the food and the ambiance, still very good value for money in my opinion.

Only one negative, the first table we sat at was near the open fire and it was also near the toilets. The smell was not good sat here so we moved over toward the kitchen area. The interior of the toilets was not to the same standard as the rest of the venue which may seem picky but even Wetherspoons always manage to have immaculate toilets on their prices!!

So glad we dropped in here, strangely I've lived locally most of my life and never had the occasion to visit. We definitely plan to go back for an evening meal, maybe to one of the dinner dance nights they were advertising. Don't drive by this one it is most definitely open for business and you won't be disappointed.
